Hi I am trying to fix my brothers computer Win 98,3GB,64Ram. It is an old computer in good shape now when I first boot up I get Floppy Disk (fail) 40. when I use a startup disk it goes to verifying DMI Pool Data and no farther. When the floppy starts up the green light comes on for a few seconds, I can hear it staring for just a minute, then nothing its will stay on verifying data this only works when I shut it down and start it up with the startup disk, If I press the reset with the disk in it comes back to Floppy Disk (Fail) 40. I don't know if this means anything but I think he tried to format the computer himself and he doesn't know how. So I would appreciate any help. Thanks.suzieQ

Hi suzieQ, Mesich, hi everyone

Way to go Mesich, you've hit the nail to the head. :-)

suzieQ,
Have you been able to reinstall the Epson 580 printer?

Hi Count, I gave up on the printer, it seemed no matter what I tried to do couldn't get it to work so I gave it to my brother he can try to get it going I just told him not to ask me anything about it. I am going to get a Cannon printer it is what I had before and never any problems like the Epson actually I know a few people having trouble with Epsom. I went to the site mesich gave me for Floppy drive info, I'm not sure of what I'm looking for, I'm one of those peolpe who needs a brick to drop on them before I get the point, so I'm going to try the cable connection now if I know how. I will post back. Thanks. suzieQ.

Hi SuzieQ, The Count, hello everyone,

For the cable ensure the twisted end goes to the floppy and the other end to the motherboard.

Ensure both ends are connected securly.

Pin #1 on the floppy should go to Pin#1 on the motherboard. If you happen to have this incorrect the light for the floppy drive will stay lit all of the time.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi suzieQ, Mesich, hi everyone

Sorry to hear about the printer, personally I'm very pleased with it (when connected).

As for the floppy drive, you could also blow some dry air into the drive with a dry air spray can. Could be some dust.

You might want to carefully examine the pins, on both the drive and the I/O controller (on the motherboard), to verify that they aren't bend.

Replacing the drive and cable might be the quickest, if the I/O controller isn't gone South which chances are rather slim.

i have had my controller go bad before but it sounds like perhaps a bad controller ,jumper on it or the drive ,or a bad cable (bending them the wrong way they quit) or plain old a bad floppy drive

I checked the cables and when I had the floppy cable in upside down the light stayed on, I guess thats how I knew, but still floppy error 40. Now I got into windows with my 98 disk and the light in the A drive would come on as it started with my CD disk for 98. I am not on any internet. While I'm in Windows I tried a floppy disk in it was slow starting maybe b/c not on the internet but the items in the floppy disk did come up. Is there a chance the Floppy disk drive could still be gone if I was getting the disk to work from windows and not the A drive from boot up. Like I said I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, I do appreciate your help.suzieQ

The magic word " Old Computer ". You are
describing a failing power supply. The first
hint is the floppy dosen't work properly.
All you need to have happen is lose 1/2 a
volt and your computer will do,or not do the
strangest things. If the computer is left on
24/7 You can shorten it's life by 25 persent
Most electronics will last 15 years. Caps.
dry out over the years and don't like heat.
Do a voltage check on the 5 volt side. Should
be about 5.25 - 5.50 the twelve volt side
should be 12.25 - 12.75 or within reason.
Sounds like your system is still set in bios
to boot on the floppy drive.
Good luck.

The longer version off Cosmos's Factory (I think that's the album) is the best.

Thanks guys for the tunes I needed a smile, because my luck with computers the last 2 days has given me nothing but heartache. My own computer went down last night or I should say my Internet and couldn't find out why so I shut off both computers mine and my brothers because I was scared of what damge I would do to them I was so ticked off. I started it up this evening and "violla" here I am again. I don't know how you people get so smart in computing. Now do not think of me as stupid even though I may sound that way HaHa. When I try to access the A: drive from within Windows it says A is not accessible The folder was moved or Removed although the icon is on the desktop it is not in My Computer. I know this is trivial for you guys but even if I can get the computer cleaned out for him will help, his funds are low right now. I know the drive works to some extent because when I use my Win98 Cd in it I hear it going, so if I didn't confuse the Heck out of you I'm still open to suggestions ( I already thought of smashing it),as always thanks. If you're getting the 'floppy disk fail' bios message, windows isn't going to see the drive either. It's pretty much got to be:

Bad controller
Disabled controller in cmos
Misidentified drive in cmos
Bad or misconnected cable
Bad drive
Bad bios update (I had that happen once)

Not all of those result in a 40 error. It probably depends on how the bios is configured.

Well I guess I need to blow the dust off the old turntable look through my album collection.

Yeah, I picked up a nice Kenwood turntable a few years ago at goodwill for practically nothing when everyone was going to cd's. But I can't get to it as I've got a several computers stacked in front of it as well as a box of SCSI cards and a box of 10/100 cards. I've just got to get this place cleaned up!
