I need to flash the bios on my Windows 2000 system, but I'm a little confused. I ran a utility program that gave me the following information:
BIOS Award Modular Bios v4.15PG
BIOS ID 05/27/98 Ali-154x-2A5K1BO9C-00
BIOS DATE 5/27/98 BIOS ROM 128K
CHIPSET Alim1531 rev 179Is this an Ali Bios? or an Award Bios?
I have found the site that gives good instructions for it, but I need to make sure that I get the right one or all is for naught... and even worse.
Any help will be appreciated.Thank you,
Michelle

The chip is an Award BIOS, but your motherboard is a Biostar M5ATA.
Check here for more info:

Award. I have the exact same one. (BIOS Vers.) Mine's on an Asus Mobo. (I flashed it to bring it to that version. Didn't really need to, just wanted to.) ;>)

I can't seem to get large hard drive supported with the bios. Do you have to pay for the upgraded bios? I've looked all around and it only leads me to pay sites.
Michelle

It appears you already have the most recent bios. It is located here:
http://www.biostar-usa.com/museum/Bios/Socket-7/M5ATA/Biosr-m5ata.htm
but you don't need it.
The Award modular bios v4.15pg line doesn't give you the information you need to upgrade your bios. Award, in effect, makes a program that encodes an EEPROM chip. You have version 4.15pg of that program. The manufacturer of your motherboard uses that program to write specific details into your bios. That why you have to get an upgrade from the manufacturer.
Sometimes a third party will write their own bios for a popular motherboard and sell it. But with newer, better boards coming out all the time that's usually not a practical option.

For the price a 3rd party is asking for an upgrade (if it exists) you could probably get a 2-3 year old super socket 7 board that would fit in your case and have support for larger hard drives. I bought one today that included an AMD K6-2 350 cpu for $35. Or you can use a drive overlay that came with the drive or can be downloaded from the manufacturer's site.

Thank you everyone for all your information.
I think my best bet is to get another motherboard, rather than spend the money on an upgrade. I appreciate everyones help.Michelle

I d'loaded my "flash" upgrade from the Asus site. Just be sure to know the exact model/rev of your mobo and current bios.
