Hi, I recently installed a few new applications and I am not sure if they are the cause of this problem. I am using Windows 98 and I have been using Internet Explorer 6 with Flash 8. Everything was fine for months until today; when I try and access content that needs flash it asks me to download the flash player but I still have flash installed. I'm not sure if it's in the right location though. I have 2 references to flash. The "flash8b.ocx" and "swflash.ocx" are in the Windows\System\Macromed\Flash folder. I also have a flash folder in Windows\ApplicationData\Flash Player and in this folder there are 2 sub-folders "Shared Objects" and "macromedia.com." Is flash installed in the right folder? Is there a way to get IE to recognize flash without reinstalling? Thanks

Hi Pete20033, hi everyone
Let me start with saying that Flash stuff isn't my best...
In one of my set ups I have Windows 98 SE, IE 6.0 and Flash 9 or 10 and as far as I can tell all works well.In the C:\Windows\System\Macromed folder I have, like you, a folder named Flash. That folder contains 3 files, Flash.ocx, GetFlash.exe and Swflash.ocx.
In the Macromed folder I also have two other folders, Shockwave and Shockwave 10.
Also I do have a folder named Flash Player in the Windows\Application Data folder, and in there I have a folder #SharedObjects with a subfolder named Gcpnf7av and a folder named macromedia.com with a subfolder support.
Thus;
C:\Windows\Application Data\FlashPlayer\#SharedObjects\Gcpnf7av
C:\Windows\Application Data\FlashPlayer\macromedia.com\support
C:\Windows\System\Macromed\Flash
C:\Windows\System\Macromed\Shockwave
C:\Windows\System\Macromed\Shockwave 10"...I recently installed a few new applications..."
How recent is recently?"Everything was fine for months until today;..."
Maybe restoring the system to a previous state, one or two day's ago solves your problem. But I doubt it will do you any good under these circumstances, the folders you mentioned differ to much (perhaps renaming the folders accordingly to the above would suffice).You could try the system restore by from DOS typing in scanreg /restore[Enter] and choose a date prior to today.
For this to work you need to reboot your computer and tab the [F8]key to get to the Windows Boot Menu and select MS-DOS prompt only (Option #3?).A other possibility would be to try and fix IE, for this you need to start the setup of Internet Explorer 6.0, and choose Repair.
There is no guaranty the above will solve
the problem, but I think it's worth a try.Best Regards and Wishes,

Hi, thanks for the help. I'll probably try and repair IE6. If that doesn't help I'll try and uninstall/reinstall flash. When I said recently I installed some programs, I meant within the last 2 days. They were all video encoding/converting programs.
