Comment:

I have a dell laptop w/98se and was given a generic flash drive. My computer is not finding a driver for it. No disc came with it and a friend emailed a zip file that I downloaded the driver on it. It does not seem to work. Under my computer, I cannot find the e drive, but under device manager I can see it under the USB as generic USB hub. Is there a website I can download another driver for it?

W98SE requires a specific driver for Flash Drives, there are no generic versions, you need to go to the manufacturers website or upgrade the O/S to WinME/W2K or later which has better inbuilt USB support.

Hi

Most USB 'Flash Drives' or 'Thumb Drives' or 'Jump Drives' or whatever they are named by the various manufacturers usually require specific drivers, but only for W98SE. Many of the drivers supplies for W98SE are 'generic' in the sense that they are simply 'USB Mass Storage Device Drivers' & do NOT provide the 'bells & whistles' such as 'security lock' or 'encryption' or 'password security' - you need more complex driver versions or additional drivers from the manufacturer.

Some 'generic' USB Drives are rebadged main brand types !!

You could try the 'Lexar Jump Drive' drivers

http://www.lexarmedia.com/

http://www.lexarmedia.com/drivers/index.html#jumpdrive

Go to URL http://www.lexarmedia.com/ click on Downloads tab then scroll down to 'USB Jumpdrive' & match it to 'W98SE' column, the driver should be '2.0' click it and a download dialogue box will open to download file 'Jdusb2.zip'

When downloaded, unzip it & read the instuctions - the instructions.htm file doesn't work too well, but all the pictures are there in the unzipped folder, you just have to view them separately.

There are NO GUARANTEES that your USB Drive will work with these drivers. I am only suggesting them as 'worth a try', as the 4 files are very basic. It is the .inf file that your computer looks for & that you have to direct it to when using the 'Add New Hardware' dialogue boxes.

Best of Luck.
