A very common error is to forget about installing the USB drivers for your motheroard or add in card.

Check if device manager can see the USB bus.

Yes, it does. The only problem seems to be that the drive isn't assigned a letter but, I can't do that somehow with Win98. It says that the device is working properly in Device Manager.

OK Jace, you caught me out! That was a tautology. I'm not usually prone to that.

As the drive is recognised by device manager perhaps the only thing missing is the format. Have you a utility to format the drive?

Uninstall the drivers and go to the URL below and download and install the drivers, they should work just fine.

A Powered USB HUB has a USB cable which plugs into a USB Port on the computer and a AC Power adapter which plugs in to a wall outlet 110W.

A non powered USB HUB will only have the USB cable which plugs into a USB Port on the computer.

I've seen some flash drives that only work under WinXP. I tried a search but couldn't determine if that's the case with your drive or not. Does the box indicate that it will work under Win98?

From what I've found, it looks like that drive requires Win98SE.

I have 3 different brands of USB flash drives which say for Windows 98SE or higher.(Lexar, SanDisk & UStorage Pin drive ).
But have installed the Windows 98SE drivers onto a Windows 98FE system and all work just fine.

Make sure that you have the motherboard chipset drivers installed or if you have installed a USB PCI card make sure the drivers are installed.

You should have no problems.

JPW gave you the url for sandisk drivers, or you can click here

You listed your OS as 'Windows 98 standard' which most people take to mean first edition. USB devices generally don't work well on that version.

I'm not sure how you managed to get the drivers installed if you did not receive a CDROM or download them from the manufacturer. If you did infact install the drivers, have a look in the folder you installed to and see if the is an initialise utility.

I recieved the drivers from SanDisk's website, referred by the instructions that came along with the drive. Also, there isn't a folder in Program Files for Cruzer Micro.

My OS is Second Edition, I thought it was first edition because I've never even heard of SE until yesterday.

Now I know that it should work. I don't understand what the problem could be except the USB. If that's the case then I need a solution.

The circle is complete! We are back where we started.

Windows 98 SE was introduced in late 1998 to overcome some problems the the original windows 98 suffered from. It also added some new features such as USB (rudimentry) support.

Your USB flashdrive is reported in device manager without error. This indicates that there is no problem with the drivers. What may cause windows explorer no to recognise a drive is it is not formatted in a way that it can recognise. What we need to do is format the drive as FAT32. Unless you have a utility to do this, we cannot get very far. If you have any friends running XP, their computer may be able to do this through 'disk management'.

Of course there is always the possibility that the drive is faulty.

I gather that you were able to format the drive on another computer. Try also to transfer some files to it.

USB drives are meant to be hot swapped. If you had the drive plugged in while booting, try removing it. Wait a minute and plug it back in. You should receive a message about the new drive being installed. Some times the other way around works. Boot with the drive in place.

Whilst there shouldn't be any difference, I would also look in windows explorer (Win key + E) and see if it is there.

Don't forget to try other USB ports. They can get damaged or even not be connected.

Where does the flash drive appear in device manager? Do you have any drive letters hidden using TweakUI?

I uninstalled the driver for the Flash Drive and rebooted and replugged the drive back in. It detected the hardware but, it could not install the drivers that way. I figure that I have to do it manually with SanDisk's Win98SE Driver.

The drive still does not appear in Explorer so I cannot transfer files onto it. The flash drive appears under Hard Disk Controllers in Device Manager and also appears in one of the ports on USB Host Hub.

You did take note of the sequence, install the drivers then plug in the drive? Failing to install the drivers first can cause windows to attempt to install the wrong drivers which upsets the process.

How did you format the drive?

The fact that the drive accepted a format suggests that it is OK. Try taking it back to school and put some files on it, then look to see if they are there. This will make sure that it does work properly.

It seems to me that you a picking suggestions to try. This makes it difficult to know what you have and have not tried.

I'm having the exact same issues with a customer. I stumbled upon this discussion searching for a solution. I think you will find that this problem is not isolated to that USB device. It will problably happen with any USB device that needs a drive letter assignment. At least that is the case for my customer. What started it for us is that his camera won't show up in My Computer. I tried using my USB drive on his system, that I know works fine on other 98 se systems, after I install it's usb driver. It shows up in device manager, but not in My computer. I am going to try the Tweakui option next time I'm over there. I'd love to know what you do to fix it if you find a solution.

I am having the same problem with WinXP SP2. My flash drives are not showing in Windows Explorer or My Computer, but do show in Device manager and work in software programs. Windows forums have not helped, Sandisk has no solutions, ZIO has no solutions, and neither does Olympus. The drives were recognized until the other day. Don't recall doing anything to upset XP. I had this problem a few months ago. Someone, gave me a registry fix (Sandisk I think) - but didn't keep it. Temporary Fix - Download ExplorerXP - it works great. http://www.explorerxp.com/
