I'd say 7 is overkill.
You're probably best off with a combination of different types of firewalls: network (hardware) level and sofware level.
You can get a hardware firewall for cheap ($20 - $30). It works by hiding the internal network IP's from external access. Then a good software-level firewall, ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/ -- the free version will do) does a good job of handling application access.

Try Sygate personal Firewall....it's also free but has better features than the free zone alarm
