Do I really need a firewall to browse online?

I just use this computer to browse online, no downloading

If the file sharing is turned off do I really need to have a firewall?

Yes, you definetly need a firewall!!!

There are good free ones. ZoneAlarm is one.

ZoneAlarm is pretty bloated. Try one of these:

Jam is correct (as always). Zonealarm uses quite a bit of memory compared to other firewalls. Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall is another firewall that is usually highly rated and uses very little memory.

I tried Kerio on one on my machines after it was recommended to me by heropsycho (another forum regular)...I'm still using it after many months. It will operate as the full version for 30 days, afterwards, it downgrades itself to the free version. Occasionally you'll get a popup prompting you to upgrade to the full version, but other than that, it works great. I think you'll be surprised at how often it "catches" something trying to access your machine while browsing online.

I really like ZoneAlarm, but I think I'm gonna give Kerio a try.

You need a firewall, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a software firewall. If you connect to the internet through a router, the default hardware firewall settings in the router configuration are often enough, if you don't download anything dangerous such as illegally obtained movies or music. My default router settings pass all the Shields Up! and online Norton Security tests. I haven't used a software firewall for 98SE for years. When I did I used Tiny Personal Firewall.

Too bad you are on Windows 98 .... Comodo would have been my recommendation.

Using windows 98 , You could use an older version of Zone Alarm. I am using version
3.7 and it work just fine.
