I had to reinstall windows a few weeks ago and after upgrading to IE6, whenever I save a file the icon will not show up. At first I thought thatmaybe that I didn't save the file, because it doesn't appear in the save as window either. But windows always asks me if I want to replace it when it looks like it isn't there. the only way I can get the icon to show up is by selecting refresh on the menu after I close the particular program I saved it with. If you could help great thanks. I tried scanning for errors and defragmenting and they don't seem to work.

I wonder if you mean the "file" doesn't show up, not just its "icon".

First step, go to Start/Settings/Folder Options/View. Under Hidden files check "Show all files". Underneath that UNcheck "Hide file extensions for known file types".

Try again and let us know if there is any improvement.

Well I guess it would be the file. I already checked folder options and just about everything is selected to be shown. It's just I'm at a loss for words on how to describe the problem, because whenever I check most sttings features there's no obvious sign of a problem. Which feaks me out a bit.

There is a registry key for refresh time,
This is all i have on it:

in Registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update,add or change the value named UpdateMode, changing its current data of xx to 01.

OK, I just wanted to be sure all files were set to show for starters.

You said scandisk & defrag didn't work. Do you mean they wouldn't run or they didn't fix the problem? Running scandisk (if you can) would be a very good first option.
I rather doubt defrag will help with this problem.

If all was OK after the Windows install but appeared after the IE6 upgrade then there is nothing lost by running IE Repair (Control Panel/Add-Remove then double click Microsoft IE & Tools). I'm not too convinced it will help but IE and Windows are highly interlinked and it's harmless.

No harm shutting down to DOS restart and typing scanreg /fix either, it has been known to sort out general problems. Again I have to say that it is rather hopeful that it will cure this symptom.

It all sounds very much at the heart of the system, so I think you might have to consider reloading Windows again on top. You won't loose your files, as you probably know.

See what other folk think but this is a rare (if not disturbing) symptom so don't hold your breath for a rush of ideas.

Where isn't it showing up?
In Internet Explorer?
Or some other particular program?

Derek. Uh, they just didn't fix the problem. Second, I'll give it a try.
Sekirt. In windows explorer itself (desktop, or currently open folders) The only way I really try to describe this is, it's almost as if windows wont refresh after a new file appears.

lori, This is just a WAG but the ShellIconCache (no extension) file may be corrupted. Start your computer in SAFE mode then restart it in Normal mode. This will rebuild the ShellIconCache file and may correct the non existent icon problem. It's worth a try.

If the "file" is there before refresh but the "icon" isn't right, then Tufenuf might be onto it. If the "file itself" doesn't show until refresh (which is the way I read this problem eventually) then rebuilding the Shelliconcache file won't help.

Pretty harmless to try though, unless you are one of the unlucky ones and this file obstinately refuses to rebuild. This will be obvious by the desktop icons showing default icons which take some time to change back to the normal ones after reboot. If you run into this situation then shout back because I've found a way around this that works more reliably than that suggested by MS.

From this web site:
Windows Explorer Refresh

You can make Windows Explorer constantly refresh and update its files and folder views. Go through the Registry through RegEdit, and navigate through the left-hand pane until you get to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / System / CurrentControlSet / control / Update item. In the right-hand pane, click on UpdateMode and select Modify. In the Edit window, change 01 to 00. Exit everything and reboot for this to take effect.

Derek: I tried a few things. I searched the reg. in safe mode and found something called slow icon overlay, But couldn't find any help/ info on it at microsoft. I also forgot to mention before this whole problem started there was one wierd occurance: The network neighborhood icon wasn't on my desktop when I updated, which I kinda blew off til just now. And Sekirt, I'll give it a try

I see this as a "file" refresh problem rather than an icon problem. I don't recognise the registry entry you gave but doubt it has any bearing on your problem. Even the shelliconcache thing is unlikely.

See how you get on with sekirts suggestion. Other than that I'm out of ideas, apart from Windows overlay.

Run SFC (system file checker) and see if something comes up corrupt or missing.

Start->Run. Type: msinfo32 Click OK. When the box comes up, click Tools->System File Checker.

Whatever happened to Network Neighborhood icon? Did it just come back on its own? Or is it still missing?

Pop back if you get a file problem reported with sfc and give us the file details. You have to be a tad careful, especially with IE file versions.

If we're not around, check here against my collation and WhitPhil's additions:

Hmmm...tweak UI. Go to the Repair Tab. Run the icon repair on tweak UI. See if that changes anything. Maybe even run all the repairs listed there.

I'll leave that file up to other experts...I don't have it on my hard drive. According to MS, is located in the Net8.cab File on the Windows 98 CD.

Okay. I'm back. I did a fresh install of windows. Then a step by step of basically installing and updating of my programs, checking the icon saving problem after each install/update. No problem occured. Until I changed the settings in the Appearance tab of the display properties. Then sure enough, the icons/files wouldn't appear after I saved them. I did change the icon spacing to 35, thinking it was that I changed it back to 34 and the problem is still there. So. anty help. If your still listening.....

Tricky all this without the machine in front of us and being able to see exactly what is happening.

From your original post it would seem that the "complete file" is not showing but when you try to save over it Windows says it is already there.

For this reason I still see this, rightly or wrongly, as a "file" problem rather than an icon problem. The icon is simply attached to the file.

Maybe you can untangle this by staying in Windows Explorer and ensuring that you are set to "List" (in View). This will mean that the icon is diminished (with the file name to the right of it) and it might help us both understand the situation better.

What was the Appearance setting you changed in Display/Properties that brought this problem back again? For information, the default icon "spacing" for DESKTOP (horizontal and vertical) is 43. The default icon size itself is 32 (it just says "icon"). None of this should matter a fig if you are working within Windows Explorer using LIST.

I have that uneasy feeling that we are not comprehending exactly what you are seeing and/or what exactly is going on. Sadly words don't paint very good pictures.

Well I'm kinda lost at the explorer comment. I meant that windows and explorer themselves will not show anything, beacuse it is in list mode. the settings I changed were starting from the top: active titlebar (Fonts/colors), application backround (color), desktop (color), Icon spacing vet and horz to 35, inactive titlebar (fonts/ colors), Menu (fonts), scroll bar to 11, selected items (font/colors), and tooltips (window color). Just about everything.

Also I just noticed that when I try to move a file from say the desktop/my documents folder (on the desktop) to a folder on the (don't exaclt know the words) main hardrive: where the program files and windows folders are. I can only seem to make shortcuts in this folder rather than move the file itself.

Sorry, seems like we are both thinking along different lines and it is too tricky to understand and sort out without me being in front of the machine to see exactly what you mean.

All I can suggest therefore is:

1. Undo whatever settings you made that caused this problem to arise once more. That should give you some more clues about it.

2. See if it is any different if you set yourself to Classic Style rather than Web Style (Start/Settings/Folder Options).

3. Try working with your files "entirely within Windows Explorer" (Start/Programs/Windows Explorer), set at List. See if the problems are still present when you do this, as opposed to whatever you are doing now.

4. Repost the problem, it is quite old now and some new ideas might help. Make sure you make it as clear as possible exactly where you are on the machine when you are getting these problems.
