Files won't open

I burned a CD with a backup of one system's files (W98 2nd - used an old HP drive (91xxC or something?)). I put those files from the CD onto another system (W98 2nd), and now the files (*.txt) in some directory trees won't open. Double clicking doesn't open them. The right mouse button window doesn't even have the "OPEN" option for those files. I can, however, drag the file icon to the text editor icon to open them, but what happened to the double-click or right mouse button open options?
