Hello mates,

I have a new laptop and have been transferring all my files by burning them into a series of CDRs and have run into what seem to be burning errors. Some of the files that were previously recognized as MP3s or Word documents, etc, appear on the burned disc without the proper icon (ie, the blank Windows icon given to a file when it doesn’t recognize it), and with a different name. The titles are changed to weird file names like “ü”, “G_” or “Ó” and can’t even be copied (I get an error message when it tries to copy the file to the new computer). Does anyone know the explanation for this? I’d greatly appreciate any help. Oh yes, I use Windows 98 SE.

Also...I may as well ask this while I’m at it, even though it’s not burning-related. I also want to completely clear the old computer because I’m selling it to a friend. Now, I know that much can be cleared by going to Settings -> Taskbar&Start Menu ->Clear…but there’s still things left in the memory when I go to the subject line when composing a mail, or for Google searches, etc, and I’d like to clear it all.

Thanks so much for your help!

Cheers,
J.

On the 2nd question. I assume you do NOT wish to reformat it and entirely empty the machine (no Windows no nothing). In which case first step is to go to Control Panel/Add-Remove and see if there are any programs in there that you don't wish to be retained. If so they can be removed using the button.

Also go to Control Panel/Internet Options.
Hit "Delete Files" and "Clear History" buttons.

You could then go into either My Computer or Windows Explorer and see if there are any files that you put in and would like to remove. Chances are that they are mostly in My Documents, but you may have put some elsewhere.

Unless you want to reformat I would advise against removing any file that you are uncertain about. It could be a system file and removing it would stop the machine working. Incidentally I have assumed you mean hard drive (nothing is retained in "Memory" = RAM after re-boot).

Maybe someone else will be able to add to this list but it's a few to be going along with.

No idea on your strange burning problem. If your burning software has gone wonky then uninstalling and re-installing it might help. Maybe someone else has some better ideas about this one.

Derek

Hi,
For your first question try reinstalling the software and burning at slower speeds because it has less chance of stuffing up.

For your second question to get rid of the stuff in google ect go into Tools-Internet Options-Content-Auto Complete-Clear Forms, and if you want uncheck forms. then test it by pressing a letter in google.
