OS: win98
CPU/Ram: pentium 128.0MB
Comment:

cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows appication.

the windows registry or system.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

if you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstalled or setup program .

if you still want to use the appication associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file .

c:\Kademo\VRSD.386
press a key to continue

I know that I deleted games and old stuff from this pc but I don't remember which game or what to do now so this doesn't keep on showing.

Open the file C:\Windows\system.ini
with Notepad.

In the [386enh] section, you will probably find a line that says
device=c:\Kademo\VRSD.386

Delete that line, and save the changes as you close the system.ini file

The message at bootup should not appear again.

Hi tuley

System and System32 are subfolders in the Windows folder.

System.ini is a file within the Windows folder.

Open Windows Explorer and click on C:\Windows, then scroll down the list of FILES on the right hand page till you come to the system.ini file

Right click it, and choose EDIT
It will open ( either in Notepad or Wordpad ) and you can edit the rogue line.

Now you've confused me. Did you find an entry for VRSD.386? I assume you are now getting a similar report for CNSMINKP.VXD (that file no longer exists either).

If you are happy in the registry then you could type regedit in the Run box then use Edit/Find to look for the file that is reported as missing. If you find it you can delete the entry in the right hand pane. Make sure you know exactly where this file is saved to.

Best first to go to My Computer in registry and then use Registry/Export Registry File. This will save a copy of your current registry so if you make a mistake you can merge it back in again.

From what you are right right now I would hope that format won't be necessary. Keep us updated with exactly what error/file is being reported.
