Hi !
When i'm copying/moving files between physical drives on my system, the PC nearly freezes, making it impossible to work. Every 10 seconds or so, i can move the mouse a bit, and then it locks up again. When the file-copy/move is finished (wich takes a long time, i can continue working more or less normally...
Are there any settings in the Bios i need to adjust ?Regards,
RoB

If the drives are on the same IDE channel, you could move one to the secondary ide and that should cut down on the data collisions you seem to be experiencing.

Make sure they are on Master and Slave, with the correct jumper settings, which you probably already know. The other thing which could be your biggest obstacle is RAM memory. On my system I have maxed out at 750mg's of RAM. If I could go higher I would. I am currently consolidating 4 drives & I am experiencing the same problem, but yours seems to be much worse. With the cost of memory so cheap - stock up as high as possible. Also, defrag your drive. I use Norton and lock files in place through "Unmoveables". Good luck, let me know how it turns out.

If you are copying a lot of small files then
the process takes much longer. System
overhead in reading directories and creating
new directories and file entries.Apparently there is a bug in Win98 file
management system that will increasingly
slow the system down. I find it faster
to copy several directories and then reboot
the system.

Tech-Fred is correct. There is a known bug in Win9X that brings the system to it's knees when a very large number of files are deleted/moved. Microsoft has acknowledged the problem. I don't think there is (or ever will be) a fix.
I encounter the problem very often and it takes a reboot to get the system back to normal.
