If you remember, I'm the one who needs to format and reinstall Windows 98 all over again. BUT, can anyone give me a site where they explain the procedure step by step. I really don't understand Fdisk and partitions (From what I've read, I need to do this before I format, correct?) Since my system is limited I don't know how much to put in there for a partition, this is where I need help. I don't want to mess it up. Also, can you tell me what files I need to back up...I believe there are three important ones but can't figure out which ones, they all look important to me?
I need to get this done today so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Vicki

Well, when i format a computer, i usually don't use fdisk. ( make a Win98 bootdisk before formating)

I just start the computer in DOS mode, type FORMAT C: and its done ! I only use fdisk before formating if i have partitions.. and even if you have partitions and want to keep them ( ex. C:/ & D:/ ), just format the last one & then the first. ( ex. 1st: Format D:/ & then D:/ ).

After that, put your Win98 CD & restart the computer and follow the installation procedures.. ( if your CD is not recognized, just reboot with your Win98 bootdisk you make previously).

Hope i helped you :)

Hi Vicki, formatting and reinstalling is not that hard. It's just scary the first time. All you need to back up is files that you want back when you reinstall. Back them up to a cd or something. Then make sure you create a bootdisk for your OS. You can create one by going to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove and go to the second tab to create a bootdisk (need a floppy disk). After that you can go to Start->Run and type in fdisk. If you have any partitions (separate drives - drive letters) and you backed up all the data there also, you should choose the option to delete partitions and delete the partitions. If there is just on partition, then all you need to do is format. Make sure you have the bootdisk and Original Full Version Windows CD. Choose the option to format in fdisk.

After the format (takes a while), reboot if it didn't do so already by hitting ctrl alt del. Then go into your bios settings (refer to pc manual) and change the boot sequence to boot from floppy first. Insert the bootdisk. Choose the option with cdrom support. After it's done take out floppy and reboot. Go back into bios and choose to boot from cd first. Save changes and insert CD. Installation should begin. If not type in setup or install.

I also have the steps explained at my websites.

Hope that helps.

Kevin.

Vicki, as far as informative sites go, you're there. On the left of this page you'll see links for Howto's and Install Guides. Much info there. There's a lot of advice to be had by responses to your post, but give those on the left a quick read and you'll be fine. These are "tried and true" established guidelines. They work.

I don't mean to sound as if the replies to your post aren't valid, far from it, but start with the basic methods. If the information there doesn't fit within your particular scenario, post back and the people here will get you through it.

Well I formatted the hard drive and then tried to reinstall Windows 98... Nothing happened.

It takes me to the A:\ prompt and sits there. Above that it say: MSCDEX Version 2.25
Drive E: = Driver MSCD001 Unit 0

Now, if I go to Bios and make the CD-rom boot first it still takes me to the A drive.

If I change it to D:\dir I can see all the files and the D is MS-RAMDRIVE.

If I try to change it to the E drive I get this: CDR101: Not ready reading drive E Abort, Retry, Fail?

Ok, is this the end of this machine? I guess nothing is simple. Anyway, nothing is loaded yet.
Thanks
Vicki

Vicki, leave the boot sequence to A: then C:. Insert the bootdisk in the floppy drive & reboot. At the A:\> prompt type:

E:\Win98\setup (ENTER)

If you receive an error message, post back here with the exact message. Also, try:

dir E: (ENTER)

Post the results of that command also.

HTH

Dave

HI Dave..

I put the boot sequence to A: first, C: second and CD-Rom: Third. Hope this is what you meant for me to do.

I rebooted and at the A:\> prompt I typed: E:\Win98\Setup and received this error message:

CDR101: Not ready reading Drive E Abort, Retry, Fail.

Next I typed in: A:\>Dir E: and got:
Volume in drive E is Windows
(this is followed by a list of files)

Vicki
