fdisk can't delete partition

Comment:
I picked up an old samsung 4.3G drive.
fdisk/status reports a primary and extended partition, both about 2G. Both are DOS.
I'm unable to delete the partitions, because fdisk thinks that there are logical drives defined on the partitions. But when you try to delete the logical drives, fdisk reports that there are no logical drives on either of the partitions!!!

Unless you already deleted the Logical drive, it has to have exisited on the Extended partition. Check the status of the extended partition. Delete the logical drive on the extended partition. Then delete the extended partition. Then delete the primary partition and recreate as desired.
I don't recommend doing a low level format. You will lose critical information about bad sectors which were put on at the factory.

I had exactly the same problem on a Fujitsu drive. How do you do a low level format though - through BIOS?

I agree with Marc, LLF loses factory sets and can really trash a drive. Try all else before LLF. Hope this helps

The ending of this saga can be found in a message posted in a later problem query ("Fdisk catch-22"). These were *exactly* my symptoms, and the secret fdisk switches did the trick! Thanks to all who so kindly responded to the post.
