faxing without fax machine

You can if you have a Fax modem. Otherwise you could use one of the Internet Fax services.

There's a lot of fax software that will do it. I use Quicklink III. It's win 3.1 software but works fine with 9X. I uploaded it here.
It may not work if your modem's com port is higher than com4. Also, when installing it'll ask if you want quicklink as your default printer. Answer 'no' to that.

Only if you have an analogue fax modem. A broadband modem won't do it.
