Fatal OD

Comment:

I keep getting various messages the newset being:

A Fatal OD has occured at 0246:014747FB.
Teh current application will be terminated.

When this message appears it comes on abig blue screen.

Any ideas of how to fix?

SYMPTOMS
When you start Windows, you may receive the following error message on a blue screen:


WINDOWS This program has caused a Fatal Exception 0D at 00457:000040B1 and will be terminated.

Pressing any key causes the screen to turn black and the computer to stop responding (hang).

CAUSE
This error message can occur if you are using Adobe Type Manager with certain display drivers and the Hardware Acceleration setting is not set to Full.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, set the Hardware Acceleration setting to Full. To do so, follow these steps:


Restart your computer in Safe mode. To do so, follow these steps:


Windows 95:

Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.


Windows 98:

Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu. For more information about Windows 98 startup, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.


Double-click System.


Click the Performance tab, and then click Graphics.


Move the Hardware Acceleration slider all the way to the right (to the Full setting), and then click OK.


Click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

OR.....

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the original S3 Trio64 V.2 display adapter driver included with the computer is installed.

The following programs, if they run in the background, may also contribute to this behavior:

Lotus cc:Mail


Lotus Organizer 97


HP TopTools program


Microsoft Office 95 Find Fast


Microsoft Office 97 Find Fast

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, obtain the latest video drivers (dated 03/02/98 or later) from S3.

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

Quit any of the programs listed in the "Cause" section of this article.


Remove Universal Serial Bus (USB) support.


Disable the video driver for your display adapter.


Try each workaround in sequence until you can install the program successfully.
Quit Open Programs
Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.


Click one of the programs listed in the "Cause" section, and then click End Task.


Remove USB Support
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click USB Supplement To OSR2 on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove.


Restart your computer when you are prompted.


Disable the Video Driver
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


Double-click System, and then click Device Manager.


Double-click the Display Adapters branch to expand it, click S3 Trio 64 V.2, and then click Properties.


Click the Disable In This Hardware Profile check box to select it, and then click OK.


Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

If you are using a CYRIX....

Windows: A fatal error 0D has occurred at 0028:xxxxxxxx in VXD VMCPD(01) + 000026B. The current application will be terminated.
If you press any key, you see the same error message. If you press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart the computer, the same error message occurs.

You can start Windows 95 using Safe mode.

CAUSE
This problem can occur on computers using a Cyrix 486DLC processor and a Cyrix FastMath coprocessor. Some computers with this processor and coprocessor are not compatible with Windows 95.

RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, disable support for the coprocessor in Windows 95. To do so, follow these steps:

Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.


Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


Double-click the System icon.


On the Device Manager tab, double-click the System Devices branch.


Click Numeric Data Processor, and then click Properties.


On the Settings tab, click the "Never use the numeric data processor" check box to select it, and then click OK.


When you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.

OR..........

SYMPTOMS
After you install the ATI All-In-Wonder Pro video adapter drivers version 5.0 or later provided by ATI, you may receive the following error message on a blue screen:

A Fatal Exception 0D has occurred. Press any key to continue.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur when either of the following conditions exists:


You are using a program written to use features of the Windows 3.x 16- bit video device drivers that are no longer available in the 32-bit video device drivers used in Windows 98/Me.


You are using a program that installs an older version of a multimedia program.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method:


Contact ATI Technical Support to obtain the appropriate drivers for your ATI All-In-Wonder Pro video adapter.


Contact the program's manufacturer to inquire about a possible update to address this issue.


To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

Restart your computer in Safe mode. For information about how to start your computer in Safe mode, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.


Click the System.ini tab, double-click the [boot] branch to expand it, and then right-click Display.drv=Pnpdrvr.drv.


Click Clear, click OK, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.


Repeat steps 2 and 3.


Click Select, click OK, and then click No when you are prompted to restart your computer.


Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


Double-click Display, click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.


Click the Adapter tab, click Change, click Next, and then click "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want."


Click Next, click the ATI All-In-Wonder Pro dated 5/11/98.


Click Next, click Next, and then click Finish.


Click Apply, click Close, and then restart your computer.

Want to clarify.

The information you apply depends on what video card you have s3 vige or ati all in wonder and what computer you have hp or pac bell and what cpu you have pentium or cyrix for example.

The first paragraph for adobe is often the case for many fatal od errors.
