I've been surfing the Net to no vaial trying to figure out my problem..maybe someone here can help...It's the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH....
My PC is a Pentium 486 Gateway 166 XL
I'm (still) operating from Windows 95 system and the problem occurs almost exclusively when I'm on the Internet ( like accessing my mail )..I use Netscape 4.5 for what THAT's worth ...AND I have Dr. Solomon's anti-virus software installed...
Error Message reads as follows:
A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:0444E8AF in VXD MCSCAN32(01) + 000278A3. The current application will be terminated
From what little I know and have found out...
a. This may apply to my video driver ( I think )...I surfed on over to the Gateway site and uploaded the latest video driver...problem persists
b. From what I'm reading on the Net this may have to do with McAfee Virusscan...I'm pretty sure McAffee now owns Dr. Solomon's...I upgraded my .dat file for latest viruses recently..BUT the problem existed BEFORE I did that....
I tried a clean boot...problem persisted...
Ran in safe Mode..problem persisted
one time it even changed the error message to VXD VMM(01) + 000947E whatever THAT means..
frustrated here..
Anybody???

Have you seen this discussion:
Errors involving the MCSCAN32 module -
These errors are mostly caused by the McAfee Anti-Virus Program. A good way to verify this is to temporarily disable the McAfee program and repeat the operation which caused the error. If the error message goes away when the McAfee program is disabled then it points to McAfee being the problem.
Some possible solutions.
update your McAfee virus definitions (you can download them from the McAfee web site.
upgrade your version of McAfee Anti-Virus program to a newer version
Perhaps you have a virus or a Trojan. Scan your system for viruses to see if any are detected.
For troubleshooting purposes you can also try to Remark the reference to the McAfee boot time scan in the autoexec.bat file (C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\MCAFEE~1\SCAN.EXE). You can do this by using the sysedit utility and placing the REM followed by a space in front of the entry so it looks like this (REM C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\MCAFEE~1\SCAN.EXE).

Dave,
Use the Find function to see if you have a file MCSCAN32.vxd or a dll by that name. The greatest likelihood is that that file or a supporting file has an incorrect instruction that can not be executed and results in your BSOD. Replace the file with an up dated version from the supplier and your problem should be corrected.

Dave, Check out the link below for errors in MSCAN32.VXD.

Besides lengthening startup time and hogging system resources, this is one of the major problems with McAfee VirusScan 5x and which caused me to uninstall it. In some cases, it occurs after installing a DAT update which is buggy.
If you decide to uninstall it, e-mail me directly for instructions on how to totally clean it out, because just uninstalling it from Add/Remove Programs will still leave files and other reference to it.

I've just started getting this error at the weekend, after trying out the Opera Browser for the first time. All works fine to start with, but seems to cause a problem with certain sites?
Have disabled Viruscan 5.X and all seems OK.
Tried the latest DAT file 4163 but still crashes. Will now try the Superdat file. Can't find anything on the McAfee Web Site!
Are they aware of this problem?Any further assistance welcome.
