This website is the only one I have found that tries to remedy the same problem that I am having namely playing any media after 2-3 files shuts down the application and gets the fatal exception error message 0028:164**** in VXD mstr1xp. I have tried to update the registry, I loaded Directx 9.0b and have Win98 SE. Does anyone know of any other fixes for this??? I'm not super computer literate so if you can help, try to give me the steps as simply as possible. PLEASE....

Are you using AOL?
What are you using to play the media?
What kind of media?

Window Media 9, Real ONE player and even Kazaa. Playing video mostly but sometimes audio. Even when I want to view video on MSNBC, I get the error message

Somewhere I heard that it may be a virus attached to DirectX and anti virus software cannot detect it. Something call "Anti-Virus Direct"

I have a similar problem. Fatal error at 0028:c162e626 in VXD mstr1xp whenever I play Win Media 7.1. At first the media would play with no sound. I reloaded Win 98 and downloaded DirectX 9 and a security patch straight from Microsoft. Now I get sound but the above problem. I don't have AOL.
I suspect a driver problem but I'm not sure what specific driver WMP 7.1 takes. I can't find a driver named mstr1xp.vxd on my machine. Any suggestions appreciated.

I think it is a driver issue too. When I am loading Win 98, there is a message that says no drivers are loaded. Do you get the same message?

I have the same problem.
Under Win98 SE comes error message "fatal exception error in VXD mstr1xp..." - under Win XP reboot the system.
Player is all the same. Problem arises with all... :-(
