Comment:

After installing a new motherboard & chipset (AMD-K6 400) and everything working wonderfully, I installed "Links LS" (game program). When attempting to run the program, an error message stated it couldn't run the game w/ "System Agent Com Window" running. After re-booting I received a "Fatal Exception 0E AT 0028:C0005338 IN VXD VMM(01)+00004338". I uninstalled "Links LS", but I continue to get this Fatal Exception from time to time.

Can you help?

Thanks

I recently had this error come up regularly and eventually discovered that it was due to running 66MHz SDRAM in a motherboard set at 75MHz. I solved the problem by changing the clock-settting jumpers on the motherboard - although I have to admit that I still get the odd blue screen but not nearly as frequently.

I too have the same affliction, AMD K6-2,450 w/3dnow,Epox mb,96mb pc100. Noticed that it was happening when ever I requested sys. resources. Thought I had bad 64mb chip. Removed and reloaded programs. Ran fine all day till I tried Shadow Company demo. CRASH!
Ran system check and showed was running 66mhz f/side bus. Still working on it.

I also have a K6. I have been experiencing the same problems since I had my computer upgraded. I was ready to use it for parts after trying everything. However , I did find a fix for it called vxdfix. It works perfect now. As soon as you run the program and restart , you can feel the difference. If you can't find the file , e-mail me and I'll send it to you.

I have an Epox mobo MVP3c2 k6- 2 450 and all my problems were solved by trashing the UDMA 66 hard drive cable and going back to a standard hard drive cable. I had all kinds of troubles from blue screens to exception errors, to system not booting.

I seem to get this error quite a bit aswell. I can usually temporarily fix it by simply shutting down and switching off my computer for about a minute and then restarting - things seem to be fine at the moment.

My _THEORY_ is that the problem in my case (AMD K6-2 500MHz, 64MB RAM, TMC Motherboard, UDMA66 13GB HD) is that the system simply overheats and doesn't like it. Electronics don't like getting very hot - they stop working!! I'm going to try remove the UDMA cable too, and put in another fan to cool things down. Maybe I should just get Ice-Cream!

I get fatal exception error at 0E in 0028:C0005338 in VXD VMM(01)+00004338 when I try to start Netscape. Microsoft says anything starting with 0028:xxxxxxxx (various numbers) it's an outdated Norton's virus program. However, when I get this error, I simply diable the antivirus protection long enough to start Netscape. Then I restart the Nortons after Netscape is already running. That seems to do the trick. It's not a fix, but, it works. I'm running a K-6(2) 400 with 256 mb ram, 1 30gb hd,1 8gb hd, with only the power supply fan and the processor fan, so, it could be a cooling issue.

i too have gotten this fatal of misterious and alas i may try to fix it . after a long search at MS knowledge base i found article id :q256850 wich sounded like my culparate.
after all my prob wasnt in opening progs or in the middle of them .. it was just the desire of runnning at full power i have a k6-2 500 and although that is what i have , that is not what im runnning . now underclocked at 400 the OS is up and stable.the fatal would only apear when clocked at 100x5 right at windows load up .
MS article id: q256850 atributes this problem with amd k6 2 350 and higher have this fuzzy think with some string in the vmm.vxd file and i can only guess fixing with a newer file with atributes of date\ 03-10-00 time\ 8:50pm Ver\04.10.00.2223 .now to find it and update it .. good luck !

1 and 1/2 years of vxd vmm at blah blah blah.
Spent $210.00 in new hardware and tweaking but the problem still occurs occasionally, and yes, I too have an AMD K62 450mhz.
However I do have three fans inside the can. 1 system fan, 1 processor fan and 1 power cooling fan and although I do tend to leave my unit running 24/7, the problems didn't start up immediately.
Whatever you do, don't get burned by buying a lot of new crap you don't need. Try the extra cooling fan fix, or maybe the Windows registry is corrupt. Several folks have mentioned that.
Good luck to us all!!!

I've had the same problem you are all describing, with an AMDK6/2-450 on a FIC VA503+, with 128MB PC100 DIMM. I called FICA (the motherboard manuf.) and the guy there thought it might be an issue with the RAM, but I'm not sure -- the DIMM I have now I bought because it said it would work with the VA503+! Anyway, cooling seems to be part of the issue, but even with a huge processor fan, an 8cm case fan, and a slot fan (2 4cm fans, one input and one output) ... arrgggh! Very annoying. I'm going to try to lower the CPU speed (boo hoo) to see if that makes things better.

Ok, here's my update -- I underclocked my system to 400mHz from 450, and no problems now. I suggest to everyone that you get some THERMAL PASTE from www.overclockershideout.com and use that between your heat sink and CPU -- you will have no more VXD VMM problems! Do it!

You guys running the K6 are not alone. I also get this error on ASUS MB w/CopperMine CPU 600MHz, 128 MB. My system seems to be stable using normal cable and old (8 GB) hard drive. Errors were frequent on UDMA/66 drive cloned from my original Win 98 2nd edition ... FAT errors seemed to be frequent also. I have used copious amounts of heatsink compound ... my bios monitors processor temperature and it looks ok.

Could it somehow be a UDMA/66 problem??

Add me to the fatal exception list. Mine started after getting a trojan horse virus. I took my machine to the shop. When I got it back, the technician said I might have to reinstall some software. When I got home, Norton System Works would lock up so I reinstalled it and Quicken too. Neither helped the problem and the faults were more and more often. Took my machine back to the shop. It sat under my car A/C for the 45 minute drive and was cold when we arrived. The technician put it on the bench and ran it for 45 minutes with no problems. I took it home and the fault appeared in about half an hour. I've posted messages on Compuserve and to the Microsoft Passport areas. Compuserve led me here. I added two cooling fans and it took 2 1/2 hours to crash. Microsoft thinks it may be a corrupted file and I am working with them to find the problem. I may end up reformatting my hard drive. It's never been done and I have files that date back to 1993/94. I have Windows 98 upgrade and need to be sure I do everything right before I reformat.

Sincerely, Pete!!!

I experienced the same problem. (exception error in vmm). I found that the CPU was overheating since the heat sink was full of dust and the fan had stopped working.
Check your CPU cooling.

After trying hardware fixes, ie. fans, I went to microsoft's technical assistance site,
http://webresponse.one.microsoft.com
I clearly explained my problem and the technicial, Jon Stewart has been offering me ways to track down the problem. I believe I may have found the fix. I have gone through several suggested steps which include clean booting and opening files one at a time, reinstalling windows 98, reinstalling a few other programs, and uninstalling Norton System Works. After my last round of fixes, I believe I might have hit on a winner. (don't know which one) Prior to this last effort, I might be able to run for an hour or so before the crashes started. So far, I have had my computer running for 14 hours and have been off and on the internet and have been in and out of the most commonly used programs several times and have yet to get a Fatal Exception. I would suggest trying MicroSoft's technical services to anyone willing to take the time to work out a fix. This service is free if you use the email option, Sincerely, Pete!!!

I also am having this problem. And I can garauntee that it is my graphics card (geforce 256). I pulled my sound blaster live card and unistalled my geforce. Then I installed the drivers that came with the card (on the cd). Ran all the things that usually make my pc crash but it didnt. After 1/2 hour it still didnt crash. Then I installed the latest drivers (with sound card still pulled out) and it crashed every time. So I removed the card again and installed the disk drivers. Ran the test and it never crashed...so I decided to leave it at that and not update my drivers. I put my sb live card back in and installed the software for it and my pc began to crash again. it has to be the geforce card (but can always be a combo of things). Im exhausted...someone figure this damn bug out:)

Chalk up another one here....
....but I may have a solution. Yes,
"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C0005338 in VXD VMM(01)+ 00004338".
My specs are also the same:
AMD K6-2 500MHZ / 130 Meg RAM / WIN 98
The error seems to be sporatic,
no pattern really....I would say its
a WIN 98 registry problem, don't blame
it on your CPU. I would say that the
VXD error is a bad key in the registry
originating from some newly installed software. I deleted a few registry
keys of some programs I installed and
everything seemed to smooth out back to normal. I also did a re-install of WIN98, however, it did take several reboots due to "the blue screen" lockup, etc....
Heres the VXD key location:
First execute C:\Windows\Regedit.exe then
Hkey_Local_Machine/System/Current Control Set/Services/VXD/
and /VXD/Symantec for Norton virus software, etc. (which MAY not be friendly on YOUR system, so delete that key)....but I would recommend deleting a few newly installed software keys first, they are located in the key section: Hkey_Local_Machine/software/
Another point of interest may be
to empty your C:\Windows\temp directory,
this is because it may be possible that
some installation program is halting
normal booting of a driver via possibly the
registry by continuing to still run
itself, even after reboot. Try defragging
afterwards, your system may be extremely
defragmented and ready for block errors,
possibly unrepairable if you don't put
things back in order! For gamers i'd say try re-installing your video drivers, they may be interferring with highly graphical normal game execution. I would sugguest that you
try removing the display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv
line in the [Boot] section of your C:\windows\system.ini file first though.
thx and good luck!!

Hello everyone, just thought I'd mention that I have a Inter Celeron 600 and I was recieving the same error. After looking at all the possible causes I was dismayed because I had ALOT! of the hardware that was causing the problem (RIVA TNT2 M64, Ensonique Sound Blaster, SM56 Motorola (software) modem) and several other things. I tried all the fixes mentioned on this page and several others but the final thing that did it was replacing the UDMA66 cable with a regular one. ARRRRRGGGGGG!!!! Unfortuatly I know get a slow through put but do get play my favorite games. Hope this helps.

TNT/GEFORCE & SB problem,

Hi I get the exact same error messages as previously stated by some of you.

I have just started experimenting with disabling AGP support in blastercontrol/advanced settings. Seems to help but gfx performance suffers and so does sound. But if you have a creative GFX card try this for yourself and give this group some feedback on how it works. If i find out anything more I'll let you know.

This is a very preliminary test on my part but try it for yourselves.

Very odd... I am getting this problem on three of my computers... all of you seem to be running on AMD processors, when I am running two on PIII and one on PII and I am getting this problem... I'm looking into this problem and trying to fix it....

NOTE: If you notice if you are having this problem, it is not comming up really in random times but mainly whenever a program changes your screen resolution (not by going to properties and doing it there) but if you load up a game and keep going back and fourth between an area where it changes screen resolution there, you will most likely get the problem to show up
