My computer's been acting up with this error and causing windows to lockup/crash/reboot/etc... i've reinstalled winBlows and thought that would solve the problem but evidently it didn't. I'm guessing one of my simms is bad so i took one out and am running at 24 megs ram now to see if that solves the problem.. if anyone else has had this problem before or have any ideas, please write back to maximus@phobia.net
Thanks..

This is hard thing to sort out.....
Have you formated and reinstalled 95?
Other than that it could be a corrupt BIOS.. Try loading up the setup defaults.

I am getting a FATAL EXCEPTION OD ERROR AT 0028:C000291C VXD VMM(01) +0000191C. Can you please help? It is only doing it with Netscape...not with Internet Explorer. Netscape keeps crashing with a blue screen.
Anything you can advice will be much appreciated.

Re-installing win does not help. I also have the problem and I have to reinstall every week. Are you using a AMD k62 chip? I am and a lot of people who are getting this message are too. I have read everything from formatting your hard drive to upping the voltage jumper for the chip. I have no idea how to make it go away.

I have almost the exact same problem. I also have an AMD K6-2 processor. This occurs in Windows 98 not only at startup but frequently when running Falcon 4.0. By defragging my hard drive the frequency of the error has decreased but it hasn't gone away completly. If anyone figures out how to fix the problem email me.

i have an AMD k6-3 processor and 64Mb ram chip (single piece SDRAM). i have reinstall windows95 various times, but still gets it. my pc configuration is AMD K6-3 400MHz, Gigabyte GA-5AA mainboard, Micron 64Mb SDram, Creative 64AWE soundblaster card, currently using S3 trio vga card, but going to ungrade to Creative 3D blaster Riva TNT2 (bought the card already, but not yet installed due to this FATAL ERROR), Quantam Cx 10.2Gb harddisk.

the weird thing about my errors is that after it happens, i could just hit any key and it goes away. after it goes away, everything seems to work like normal. but the frequency of these errors are killing me.

To be more specific, the error occurred when i used Macromedia Director 7.0. I used photoshop 5.0, authorware 5.0 and they do not give me problems. when i tried to install my TNT2 card, i could not use OpenGL or my whole PC will hang (ran quake2 in openGL mode, hanged, ran 3D studio max ver 2.5 in openGL, hanged, but not when i ran 3D Max in software mode). but recently, when i ran quake2, my pc gave me ILLEGAL OPERATION! what could be the problem? previously, quake2 could be ran for hours without a hitch, now it gave me an illegal operation.

anyone please help me. email me what you think might fix my problem at yakumo_sg@yahoo.com

Thanks.

I'm having this problem with a T4900 that I have wiped clean and installed Windows 98 on. It happens when I try to connect to the internet. Same thing happened in Internet Exploder and Netscape therefore I suspect the problem is elsewhere. This is an old machine that the CMOS battery may be dead. (I'm trying to revive the machine.) I doubt that the memory just went bad, so maybe it's related to the CMOS setup. I'll keep digging.

I'm having a similar problem when im installing windows98 or 95 when it boots for the first time.. Before this i was getting SU Errors and disabled the internal cache to correct it. Now, i don't think AMD's are the problem, this computer is not mine but its a pentium 133 on an AM Motherboard. Not only for that reason, but I have an AMDk62 and it runs fine. I think this could be fixed by adding a few lines in your autoexec or config.sys files. This is what i think now from experience with this. I'm going to search for some more information about this.
If anyone has solved this problem please email me at servo@dtx.net instead of posting your reply here, i probally wont see it.

Thanks

OK - here we go again!! I have the AMD K62 400 with a velocity 4400 and the VXD error message I'm getting is only when I try to run screensavers (they freeze and I have to ctrl+alt+delete out and sometimes even reboot my computer) or when I shut down my comp. My error message is different from every one else who has this problem. A FO has occurred at 0028:C0002591 in VXD VMM(01) + 00001591. WHAT?????? I wish I had the standard problem - but???? I run normal otherwise.

I was having all these errors Fatal Exception OE error at 0028:0000----- (diverse numbers) after defragmenting, scanning, reinstalling windows 98, getting IE 5.01 I was still getting them very often. The only thing that seemed to work was to do a Surface Scan (it took more than 2 hours but it was worth it) I have got only one exception for a couple of days now.

I just ordered a new motherboard, AMD K6-2/500 chip and had lots of problems with the VXD error and Page error messages.

After the first c: drive reformatting, same problem so here is how I have it running well at this point:

a) reformat the hard drive
b) Downclock your processor to 233 or 266 MHz.
c) Start your system with the cdrom windows boot disk and load win95.
d) When complete, download the AMD patch for Win95 from the microsoft web site, download site using the AMD search under keywork. The AMD site also has the direct link.
e) After installing the patch load WIN98.
d) If you load Office 97 stay away from outlook and only load word/exel/powerpoint.

Then upclock the chip. So far I am at the 350 setting with no problems and will continue to upclock to max. I assume the same problems will arise at 500 but I won't know. If it does we will just have to wait for a patch.

Hope this helps, mine now runs slick as snot.

JOel

Found various 0028: errors (vxd vmm) with a number of different agp cards. In each case, the fix has been to check with the video card manufacturer for latest drivers - eg ATI actually have a number of articles posted with exactly this type of problem, and released updates accordingly. Check with the card manufacturer's website and good luck!

Mid you, it's a sod keeping windows stable enough to install them half the time... gotta love micro$oft huh? ;-)

Hi, there; I'll join the club. I think I've got the same problem too. I've read something about it and it seems to be a problem with Windows under K6-2 350Mhz and above. The patch mentioned in one of the above followups does only work for Win95, as Microsoft claims the problem doesn't occur in Win98 (NOT true; I hate MS). But I can't get Win98 running at all, just upgrading the patched Win95 doesn't work at all! _Can anybody help me_?

Gidday, I am another AMD K62 victim and are using win98 (upgrade version), over the past couple of years I've upgraded every component except the motherboard, cpu, and memory. The problem is that the error is so damned random I can't pinpoint it. Sorry I can't help...But I can definitly sympathize.

Just to add my $0.02 ... I've had these problems for about 2 yrs now and I'm still trying to figure it out. It goes away for awhile, comes back, gets worse .... I've wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Win95, Win98, and now Win ME. I have a new video card, one 64MB simm, a Cyrix 233, a scsi card, a soundblaster sound card, and a network card. I've searched all over for a fix with no luck. At least now I know I'm not alone ...

There is a patch for AMD K6-300+ processors to partially rid of this error. It can be found on the microsoft site, in the knowledge DB.

I'm also having this problem on my piii-800. I cant seem to fix it in any way... Its really starting to get to me though =(

Hi!
I had a similar error message which occurred EVERY time I tried to restart or shut down. ( A FATAL EXCEPTION 0E HAS OCCURRED AT 0028:C0002591 IN VXD VMM (1) + 00001591.)It all started happening after I downloaded and installed Netscape 6 (don't do it! Ughhhhhh.....It caused SOOOOO many problems!) Even after uninstalling I continued receiving the blue screen at shutdown. And, I could not "power off" without getting a Windows protection error message. I tried absolutely EVERYTHING suggested at the Microshaft site, with no success. Finally, just out of the blue, I disabled all the game controllers and joysticks in the device manager (I don't use them). And my computer is back to normal *whew* . I guess Netscape 6 screwed up something associated with the joystick thingies (sorry about the technical language hehehe). I guess it's just lucky I don't use them. Anyway, good luck, and I hope you all find an answer to this MOST frustrating error message!!!
