I began receiving the fatal "blue screen" today, with the following message:
0028:C001B95B in VXD IFSMGR(01)
+000036DF. I was using Netscape 4.5 when it first occurred. Can you help?

I am currently trying to implement some CBT training modules via the internet on a government LAN. Each desktop system is a Compaq Deskpro 2000 running Win 95 (OSR 2) 32 MB RAM, IE 4.0, connected via TCP/IP. To view the training modules, a CBT player (browser plugin) is downloaded and invoked on each system. One then has to navigate to our server url to stream the "liveplay" training module to each client desktop. Every machine on this LAN has been giving me a Windows blue screen error :

A FATAL EXCEPTION OE has occurred at 0028:C00182E7 in VXD IFSMGR(01) + 000036DF. The current app will be terminated. Press any key to continue.

This occurs each time I try to view the training modules off our server when IE 4.0 is opened. According to the clients, this has never occured before. The same error tends to show up more frequently even when IE 4.0 is closed and one has to uninstall the player to eliminate the problem.

I have managed to get all their Toshiba Laptops to function properly which are running under the same configuration as the Compaq deskpros.

The browser plugin works as it should on other LANs with no difficulties , so I am wondering if there is a particular work around option for these desktops that are giving me grief. I have heard of folks who make adjustments to the sys.ini file, but I have seen no specific details to solve this particular error message.

Any help would sure be appreciated.

Bill,

Concerning your Fatal exception OE error with Netscape 4.5, try removing all the files from your Netscape cache, reboot, and see if you can reproduce the problem. Hope this helps.

I get the same blue screen and IFSMGR VxD message, only when I am in Netscape 4.5. It happens on both my laptop and desktop systems, which are on our LAN. It never happens on my system at home. Could it be a conflict with the network services?

I get the same 0E fatal exception in VXD IFSMGR(01) when sending a message in Netscape 4.5. I have cleared the cache files and the error persists about once out of every 5 e-mails sent. My workstation is attached to a TCP/IP network which has a NT server. I don't have this problem at home. Anybody have suggestions?

Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article ID: Q137335, In titled: "Error Message: Invalid VxD Dynamic Link Call from..." explains why these "blue screens" appear.

The url is:

http://www.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q137/3/35.asp

Also, IFSMGR is the Installable File System Manager, for VFBACKUP Helper Driver for Backup Applications. (See article)

few things you can do to fix the problem.
there is ifsmgr.vxd version 4.00.1112 which is the latest file. I think.

you should be able to find this file from the net.

what you want to do is go into your windows/system/vmm32 directory then rename your current file to ifsmgr.old

they copy the latest file into the directory.
then reboot.

hope this helps

There is a fix for these related errors, It seems that the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) Calling to IFSMGR.vxd on an 0E error is caused primarily by computers running Windows 9x and a network with tcp/ip running. The BSOD after cancelled (Press any key) will let you run normally but you wont be able to access the internet or any tcp/ip resources. The file you want to run is located at:

For the Windows 98 version:
http://www.mcs.net/~revolutn/win98_vxd_fix.htm

For the Windows 95 version:
http://www.mcs.net/~revolutn/vxdfaq.htm

You need to copy the Windows 95/98 cab files to your 'C:\Windows\Options\Cabs' directory, it's only a dos bat file!

Yes, I know this page really looks rough and you're wondering why would someone other than Microsoft release this fix? Well, I personally dont know, I dont figure out conspiracies for a living, I need to keep pc's running.. :) I've got it running on all of the PC's in my home network, and it runs great..

This fix also fixes many other problems, visit the page for a list.

Good Luck and Happy Computing!
-John

Using Netscape 4.6 & 4.51. Was blowing up regularly when sending mail. Changed proxy server (WinGate 2.6 which is running on my work station in an NT server environment) setting from DIRECT to MANUAL PROXY with proper settings and problem has gone away for today.

I get a similar blue screen. Eventually it happens enough times and I can't get back into windows at all. My computer will just keep restarting itself and I get a windows protection error. Then I'm forced to crash and format my hard drives. My computer has been doing this for about 3 months and crashed about 8 times now! My blue screen says:

A fetal excetion OE has occured at 0028:C001B01E in VXD IFSMGR(01) +0000340A. The current application will be terminated.

***PLEASE HELP! DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH OF THIS I CAN TAKE! READY TO THROW OUT MY COMPUTER AND BUY A NEW ONE!!!***

I'm having a similar problem. Fatal exception in vxd ifsmgr(01). It started with a power-chute thus morning. It seems it was too long for the ups to trap and bang, there is the blue screen again.
Can anyone tell me what to do?

Just to be different, I'm getting an Invalid page exception from IFSMGR.VXD at 0028:c02968e8 faulting component IFSMGR(04) + 000135e8 -- this problem arises on some Win95 PCs (not all) when using the net use command from within a Novell login script to map a drive letter to an NT or Samba share -- the Microsoft Client for Netware Networks has to be used here (it works fine with the Novell client) -- it launches a command window in order to run net use, and then IFSMGR crashes with the invalid page exception -- can anyone help? We are using version 4.00.1111 of IFSMGR, and can't find any updates to this anywhere. The net use command works fine when issued manually.
