**(please reply to my email if you don't mind)**

I recently installed Windows 98 on my computer, which previously had Windows 3.1. After Windows 98 copied the files to my computer, it rebooted and was about to setup the hardware/drivers/etc. and now it will NOT get to the desktop. I keep getting an error "A fatal exception 0D has occurred at 033F:00003ABC. The currrent application will be terminated." on a big blue screen (the blue page takes up the whole screen).

I've checked with "computer smart" friends and on-line and no definite answers have turned up. So I'll give as much info about this as possible.

My computer is a 486 DX4-100 MHz, 16 MB RAM, 1.2 GB hard drive (prior to installation, over 450 MB was free and 197 MB was needed to install).

Here's exactly what I did: I have a legit copy of Windows 98 so I pop that in, check the WIn 98 manual and it has specific instructions on upgrading Win 3.1 to Win 98. I try that and then 5 minutes into the installation, I get a message "Your computer already has an operating system installed, which cannot be upgraded by this version of setup. You need to obtain the WIndows 98 Upgrade. Message SU0168."

Well I was less than pleased with that. So I check on-line for "SU0168" and find many responses -- the resolution that many sources agreed was best was to rename WIN.COM and WINVER.exe (suggestions were WIN.COX and WINVER.EXX) -- this would prevent WIN 98 from recognizing WIN 3.1. So I start installing again after this and it's going fine. During the process I created an Undo disk and WIndows 98 startup disk.

Anyway, it asks what directory to put the Windows files in and suggests "WINDOWS.000" (since WINDOWS was already created for the WIN 3.1 files). Well the on-line help I got for the SU0168 problem indicated it was fine to change "WINDOWS.000" to "WINDOWS". So I did. And it's installing, takes forever, blah blah blah. Then it gets to the point where it will look for hardware/drivers/whatever (I'm sort of computer literate but not super-literate) and it reboots. Gets to the "Windows 98" intro page but now it will NOT reach the desktop.

I've tried starting in Safe Mode. No good -- the hardware/drivers/etc. aren't set up yet and I can't do that in safe mode (an error message told me as much). I tried step-by-step confirmation. I tried saying "Yes" to all the stuff I felt was absolutely needed (COMMAND.COM, MSCDEX, AUTOEXEC, etc.) and then when it asks to install Windows drivers, I say yes BUT I say "no" to each file with a "Vxd" extension. Still, this error occurs. If I don't load windows up, then I just get to DOS.

So how do I fix this problem? I could try using the Undo disk but not sure if that will undo everything properly. I could try formatting the hard drive but that's a pain and i've done it before and hope never to have to do it again. Besides, what if this problem happens AFTER the format?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
