Fatal exception blue screen

February 5, 2009 at 04:20:53
Specs: Windows 98, don't know
I opened an animated X'mas card that somehow appeared on an Excel spreadsheet format and ever since then I am getting shutdown problems. The following error code, then when I press any key as per message options, it returns to desktop and the cursor freezes and I have to power off. So, next time I get on the scan process is initiated as the pc says I have not shutdown properly. Message I get on the blue screen of death is as follows:-

fatal exception 0E has occured at 0028:C29F4E8D in VXD PCIMP(01) + 00001CAD

Any help is very much appreciated - know only to use the pc and am rather ignorant re hardware etc.....so, pls hold my hand all the way. Many many thanks in advance. No, I cannot quite afford a new pc just yet.

Why in the world would you open something without knowing the source. Sounds like malware to me.

Run any malware programs you have. You could then try rolling back to an earlier version of your saved registry files.

1. Start the Computer with Win98 Boot Disk in Floppy A: drive
2. Choose option #2. Start Computer without CD-ROM support
3. At A:\> Prompt, type C: and press [Enter]
4. At C:\>CD Windows \Command
5. At C:\>Windows\Command\>SCANREG /RESTORE [ ENTER]
6.Restore a Good Registry Entry from the Blue Registry Checker window
7.choose a date to restore before problems occured

If the Win98 Boot disk method is used to do the Scanreg /Restore command, [Unlike Starup in MS DOS Mode or Command Prompt Only or Safe Mode Command Prompt from Windows 98 Starup reached on CTRL/F8 on Power On] typing Scanreg /Restore at C:\> and pressing [ENTER] might return "Bad Command" on the DOS Prompt.

Help.....did not manage to get the boot disk but was able to resolve issue via CC cleaner and managed to shut down as per normal. Now when I try to get on the pc and as it goes through the process it cannot even get to the window page . Am on windows 98 manual start up menu and it is giving me 3 options ie start with cd rom support, without cd rom support and view help file. Followinng on the last bit of your suggestion ie choose opt 2 ie without cd rom support, I get the following message - the following file is missing or corrupted: COMMAND.COM
Type the name of the Command Interpreter ( eg, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)
A> and the cursor sits here

What commands should I enter????? I cannot even get onto my pc less alone the net. Am borrowing a friend's laptop to do this message. All help very gratefully accepted and am sttill kicking myself for opening the unknown file. Never again promise.

Thanks in advance.

When you see the A: then follow the instructions in reply #1 above by starting with line 3.

Do the lines, one by one, hitting enter after each line.

The A is just A> not the A:\> as per your line 3. Anyway when I type C: and press enter I get a repeat of the message ie

the following file is missing or corrupted:C:
Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)

Beg your pardon - did something so stupid I hate to tell you. Got onto Windows now and at least I can try to save some of my personal files onto hard disk. Will try the internet later and then try to close and see if my problem is resolved. For the time being, just ignore my silly response above and I will revert and update later as to the final outcome. Many mANY HEARTFELT THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND HELP.

Nope, no good. Just been on the net etc and try to shutdown and got the same blue screen with following message

fatal exception:0E has occured at 0028:C29F4E04 in VXD PCIMP(01) + 00001C24

and when I press any key, it returns to my desktop and the cursor freezes ...AAAAAAAHHHHHHH

Also, where is a reliable source of Win98 Boot Disk download?? I tried one the other day unsuccessfully and got a whole lot of virus ( thankfully captured on my symatec). As it is I was unsuccessful in downloading it.

Pls do NOT give up on me.....

Can't believe it but it looks like all is fine now. Downloaded bootdisk and did as per your instructions. Only problem is all the dates offered on the restore schedule were problem days as this has been going on since early Dec. So, just selected the bootdisk one and looks like all is GOOD, so far. Thank you ON TOP of the HIll ......I am on top and over the mountain right now. Thanking you HEAPS.....what a wonderful forum this is. Hopefully I do not resurface too often. Good work everyone.
