The other day I was browsing the internet with my computer. When I shut the computer down, it shutted without jamming to the shutdown screen (as it sometimes does). I didn't install anything new.
The next day, at bootup, I got this blue screen error:
"Exception 0E has occurred at 0028:FF04B623, VxD ---. This was called from 0028:C1C76A67, VxD ---."
After I pressed a key, i got this error:
"Fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0157:0000663D."
Those numbers are always the same. After this, I reboot the computer, choose "command line only", write "win" and the Windows starts correctly. I don't understand how this is possible, because whether the computer starts the Windows by itself, it loads the exact same drivers as it does when I manually enter "win" in DOS and start Windows.
This has bothered me a couple of days. It doesn't affect the computer's behaviour in any other way, I just have to reboot and manually start Windows in order to get it to work. I have no idea where this problem could've come from, I am absolutely sure I didn't install anything that day. My computer is AMD Athlon XP 1500+ with ASUS A7A266 motherboard, Windows 98SE and 512 Mb RAM. I am using Nvidia GeForce 2 MX-400 64Mb and I have AVG Antivirus Free Edition 7.0, Sygate Personal Firewall and Ad-Aware SE Personal running. Both the AVG and Ad-Aware detected nothing new.

Seems to me like an exception error with Windows 98. Your first project would be an "update" (should be in your start menu). or copy and paste this link.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Another question I have is, how many games are on that computer and which are they?

If the above doesn't work,
click on "start", "run", type in "msconfig", then click on the "startup" tab and copy and paste that list on here for me (or anyone).

Go to http://freepctech.com/pc/002/files007.shtml
and download "microsoft tweak UI"

Are you using Internet Explorer 5 or 6?

If you're not sure about anything, let me know or wait until someone else verifies things.

I have installed all the Win 98 SE updates there is from Microsoft. I have IE 6 but I usually use Opera 8.54. I have some games, like Mafia, Tron 2.0, Midtown Madness, Need for Speed Underground 2, Driver, Armagetron etc. but most of them are quite old and the newest installations are Tron 2.0 and Midtown Madness, but this problem occurred about a week after those were installed.
I have checked my computer with Ad-Aware, nothing suspicious there and no viruses. I also check msconfig's Startup-tab often to see if there's anything odd. There's just those programs there should be.
I am very puzzled with this one. :S

Did a google search and come up with this site:

http://www.colba.net/~hlebo49/fatlexer.htm

and eventually to this site:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/189610/en-us

Seems to be an anti-virus interface problem.
One odd thing I have seen before is Spybot Search and Destroy removing Ad-Ware.

Download Spybot from this address:

http://www.safer-networking.org

click "english",
then click "download" (top left menu),
then just scroll down and click "download here" beside the top version
(spybot search and destroy 1.4)
Run spybot in "safe mode" after it's installed and see what happens.

Judging by that article, it seems like something is wrong with an anti-virus program or possibly your firewall but I'd give spybot a go before you mess with that stuff.

Did you mean I should run Spybot in Windows Safe Mode?
I ran Spybot in the normal mode, found some trojans and executables and removed them, it didn't help. The problem is still the same. I'll try booting without the AVG antivirus running, maybe it has corrupted itself in some way as it downloads new updates every day. The problem could be within the antivirus.

Give that a shot (restarting without AVG) and see what happens.

I did some more searching and it looks like your firewall might have a conflict with Opera. Disable Opera and see if the problem persists.

This "might" prove something:

Type msconfig in the Run box.

Select Autoexec.bat tab and temporarily untick everything "except the Grisoft/AVG line".

Select Config.sys tab and temporarily untick everything.

Reboot

This sounds like a registry problem. Since it only started a few days ago, you may be able to restore a backup copy.

Start in comand prompt only. Type 'scanreg /restore' and press enter. Choose the date before the problem began. The date it happened may also be suitable.

Sometimes I seem to get brain dead about scanreg /restore. Run with Rimfire and forget my #6 unless the restore doesn't do the trick.

Thank you all, I did start Windows without AVG and it started ok. It seems the problem was within the AVG Antivirus. I think it might've got a corrupt update file or something. I'm doing fine now, I start AVG manually after Windows has started. I will try booting with AVG after some new updates, to see if they'll fix the problem. Opera and Sygate work quite fine together, except that Opera gives me an error almost every time I shut it down. It doesn't really bother me because it happens only when I exit Opera.

Far better to start your own post rather than joining in someone else's thread. This way we have no idea what Windows system you are using and no two problems are ever alike.

You msconfig list looks just fine.

It's not a good idea to disable virtual memory - in fact it's a very bad idea.

Your system will only use VM if it "needs" it. With it disabled the system is liable to crash when it's required.

There "might" be some advantage on W98 (not 95) in stopping Windows from keep preparing VM in advance just in case it might need it. To do this you type system.ini in the Run box and add this entry under [386Enh] section:-

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

Many folk claim this improves things.

To start your own post choose your OS (Windows system) at top left here and post at the bottom of the white page.

Sounds like it might be worth uninstalling AVG, rebooting and installing it again (if the next update doesn't fix it).
