Why do you want to install W98 then XP ??

May we know the model and specs of Vaio or is it a secret ?

My only XP is the "upgrade" not "full install" kind... didn't really read the package when I bought it and couldn't return after it was open :( So the only way i've got to fix it was to start with 98 then overwrite it.

As for specs... it's an older model, I don't know much. The stickers indicate it has a pentium 4 and originally loaded with XP.
What info would be helpful? It says Sony Notebook Computer model PCG-9U1L ... anything else is a guess but it's all original as far as I know. Sorry i'm not more help, i'm not too familiar with it as i'm usually a loyal HP person and this is a huge pain in the tushy.

You do not need to install W98 first:

Installing a Windows XP Pro or Home Upgrade CD without a Previous OS installed

Begin the windows install as if it was the full version, during the install you will be prompted for a previous operating system, at his point put your old operating system CD in the drive and browse to the I386 folder (for Windows NT or 2000), WIN9X folder (for Windows ME), or WIN98 folder (for Windows 98). Click ok, the windows upgrade will confirm this is a full version and continue with the upgrade (after you replace the upgrade CD)
