For any of you that know me, I'm usually the one answering the questions and not asking them... but, tonite I'm asking for help.

A customer brought in their system because when they try to type into the location bar on ie6, they get fatal exception 0e at 0028:00000001. Hit a key and then they get fatal exception 0d at 0aea:0157268b. This also happens if they try to use windows explorer, my computer, or even find-files. However, if they type a website from the start-run box, it works ok.

Here's what I've tried:
virus scan, memory tests, registry recovery, sfc replacing changed files, scandisk etc., disabled av protection, disabled all startup programs, and I'm sure there's more that I haven't listed. I'm not ready to do a reinstall yet, but it's coming soon. I noticed that in safe mode, this problem doesn't exist, which makes me believe that it might be a config problem. Maybe even bad device drivers...

My question: anyone run into this EXACT situation? if so, what was your solution?

thanks for the reply grasshopper, been there, done that. They have some info on the 0e at 0028:xxxxxxxx but the info they have all references vxd files that are mentioned with the error message. This message contains no vxd, no module name, no file, etc.

I've seen that ppl with ez cd creator 5 have had some problems like this, so I'm going to try to remove that, and then run regclean on the system to see if that can remove any junk from the registry that roxio left behind.

Any other ideas?

Sounds like you've covered a lot of bases already. I'd do a clean install. I know you don't want to, but you could spend days on this and still not find it. Good Luck.

sounds like a problem with IE to me.
maybe a corrupt file somewhere. did you try re-installing IE6?( i've never been able to get it to re-install for s**t)

there is one method... try re-installing windows from the Start/run using the /d parameter after the setup.exe (in safe mode). this should replace any damaged files in windows.

I had to remove roxio 5 from mine.. kept giving me errors like you are stating.
if the setup.exe /d doesn't work.. try going into msinfo32 and search for changed/corrupt files. it takes a while but has saved my butt a few times.

thanks all for the suggestions so far, I'm at a different site right now, but wanted to check on a few things before I go to my next site. I did try to reinstall windows but not with the /d switch... I might try that. I did however get the error message when I did try reinstalling the first time around. I thought it might be something with ie6, but other things like find and windows explorer cause the same problems... I suppose it could be a problem with ie6 as it's mostly integrated with the o/s anyway... damn that microsoft... lol.

Anyway, I'll try a few more things as suggested, and I'll let you know what I find out. But in the mean time, feel free to keep the suggestions rolling ;)

Did you try to repair internet.Go to system information and tools then you have an option, repair. You might lose all your favorite and email .
I would try to take some of your memory out if you have more than one . Check with a good ram tester to see if ram is good.

just finished letting ram test run for most of the day... pretty extensive test I have come to possess. Ram tested fine, which I figured. Passed 5 passes of this program, and was going for more, but I stopped there. If it was failing, it would have failed by then. I'll give the internet repair a shot... never even thought of that one.

Don't believe it, some one out there has the same problem as I do. However, the message I get after boot up and Win98 finding software for the Dell 1900fp, the error is fatal except 0e 0028:6015 has occurred, current application has been terminated. My temp solution was I removed the dell flat panel from the system and installed a sony 14": tube. I was able to get win98se to come back up but occasionally it would hang.
FUNNY THING IS ALL THIS STARTED AFTER ATTEMPTING TO UPGRADE TO NEXT VERSION OF ROXIO'S CD CREATOR PLATINUM EDITION-- I REMEMBERED AFTER REBOOTING THAT THE WINDOWS SYSTEM SETTINGS WERE UPDATED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS SOFTWARE UPDATE. The Fatal exception errors started happening. I ran System File checker from safe mode and restored all the altered system files from windows cab folder.

sorry for the long story... hope thissheds some light on the problem.

yeah, roxio was the culprit. but when I removed it it took the system down with it... I started to get errors about explorer causing an ipf in explorer.exe, but that just turned out to be from some files used by ie6. Turns out that roxio likes to take out more than it puts in. Once I reinstalled ie6, it's smooth sailing.

Thanks all for the suggestions, and information. I think I'll go back to being the one to help now ;)
