Every time I try to shutdown or restart from the desktop screen I get a blue screen with a message saying "a fatal exception OD has occurred at 016F:0000EB1A. The current application will be terminated. Press any key
to continue."Once I get the error message, no matter what key I press the screen turns black with a
white pointer showing and locks up. I have to manually shutdown the computer, and manually restart it, at which time I get the screen indicating improper shutdown and scanning of C:. It then proceeds to Windows and the desktop. I have no problem opening or running anything once I'm there.I ran the Systems File Checker and it showed that my user.exe and setupx.dll files might be damaged but I have done nothing with them yet because I dont't know if these pertain to this problem or even if they're truly damaged.
I have searched the entire internet to find what this error code means and how to fix it with no luck.
I contacted Gateway and they sent me seven different things to do i.e. scanreg/restore, clear temp internet files, clear programs running in background, check for conflicts with device manager, close all programs running in background, scan disk, and defragment....nothing worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below is a snapshot of my computer:

I'd say you have to reinstall Windows. There may be a solution, but there is an underlying problem that will i'm sure be solved be formatting and reinstalling, so back everythign up first. Then reinstall Windows using either Win98 CD, or Gateway rescue disc, if there was one provided

When I format and reinstall what will happen to the programs I have purchased and downloaded from the internet, i.e. WS_FTP Explorer, Norton Antivirus 2002, Turbotax, etc.? I do not have disks for these.

I had same problem when shuting down.
Try
http//users.aol.com/axcel216
look for site search on left of screen
type in Power Management Troubleshooter
when page comes up go to windows 98 essential
free upgrades+fixes and download trouble shooter takes 20 seconds.
Unzip and follow on screen instructions
