Hi Taren,
I use to get this a VXD error too. It seemeed to be something to do with my sound card (SB Live! value). Maybe you could try to:
- disable your sound card and see what happens
- get the updated drivers for your sound card.

Good luck,
Min

SB Live! Value, Diamond V770 Ultra, TMC T15VGF M'Board, 192Mb ram. Same problem. Only when playing games with D3D acceleration, specifically X-Wing Alliance or Official F1 Racing, guarenteed crash. Interstingly Papyrus Nascar 3 and Unreal Touranment work without any crashing.

If anybody has any solutions to this problem, then I'd be over the moon.

Solved VMM(01) errors by installing 'Microsoft Virtual Machine' Download using W98 windows Update or d/l from www.download.com search 'Virtual Machine'.
Tricks to get on net when VMM(01) is acting up.
1) Minimize Browser when page is loading. Java used on the page activates VMM.
2) Change to Standard VGA video card, in the Device Manager.

Damn that VMM (Virtual Machine Manager)

I had the same problem with a fast AMD processor, seemed that the the processor got too hot, so I put it from 533Mhz to 475Mhz, which kept the temp down. Configuration is stable for a couple of days now. (Maybe you can also try to put a larger cooler on the processor). Easy to try, so why not...

SUCCESS!
Here's EXACTLY how I did it:
1. D/l the new Soundblaster Live patch, "emu10k1.vxd", from http://www.buyabs.com/drivers.asp to a new directory on your desktop.
2. Open that new directory so you can see the new file.
3. Open directory C:\Windows\System in another window.
4. Find OLD file "emu10k1.vxd" in System dir(yes, it has exactly the same name as the new patch you downloaded)
5. Delete that OLD file.
6. COPY NEW "emu10k1.vxd" to the System directory by right-click-drag to the System directory window. Select "copy" from pop-up menu.
7. Reboot.
There's probably an easier way, but I took the ole' Mac drag-and-drop method. Sorry to sound sooo simplistic, but it might help someone.

also if i did get it installed it would go into the blue screen every time i booted the computer.
so the way i dide this was went into the bios and found that the only way it did not have any errors (i mean none) was to disable the cpu internal cache.and i know that is not the total solution but it will at least let you do all that you need to do ro solve the taotal solution in the mean time without having errors.the only draw back is the speed:) good luck and please email me if there is a true solution ro this prob,

I KNOW THE PROBLEM GUYS!

I have been working with that god damn emu10k1.vxd blue screen of death error for a long time. And i figured out it has to do with your ethernet card. Once i removed my ethernet card, my sound card worked perfectly. So, after reinstalling my ethernet card from the win98 cd, everthing works now. If you do have an ethernet card, remove it, then reinstal it with the win98 cd. This worked for me. Good luck.

The problem dissappeared when I took out the virus checker (Mcaffee) but comes back immdieately after reinsatllation. Also dissappears when it is disconnected from the network. Anybody got any idea as to why this would occurr?

the emu10K1(01) at 0028:xxxxxxxx happens if you have Pentium III and either a soundblaster live or TNT2 vga card. I found information on this at the driverforum website.
Info on problem resolution:

http://www.driverforum.com/sound/6087.html

or just do this:

1.Raise the Shuttle site http://www.spacewalker.com/english/default.htm
2.Click on FAQ (upper right hand corner)
3.Go to Extensive Content
4.Go to Shuttle Support * Content
5.Go to Mainboards - Important Info
6.Go to Windows Operating System
7.Go to Windows 98: Sound Problems with Pentium III and Soundblaster Live/TNT2 vga

If your problem is soundblaster live, then this has now been fixed with creativelabs latest driver for soundblaster live. Goto creative labs web site and download the latest soundblaster live driver.

Typical.....creative labs superior support....????????

I have had this problem for ever it seems. At 1st, it was coming hand in hand with some
msgrv or something like that(it was almost 6 mos ago)I upgraded my PC, (NOT cuz of the vxd prob.) Too my surprise, the problem was back again, (but w/o the msgrv) we then concluded that it has to be a bad copy of win98. ....NOT! then we decided to install the 2nd edition..... this did help.....for awhile...... i ended up reformatting(cuz monitor would go out but PC kept going) but.... sadly enuff, this hasn't helped either... may even be worse. I get the vxd vmm (01) just as win98 loads, or when i want to go online. *NOTE: this doesn't happen ea. time, but i DO get the blue screen with the VXD VMM an average of 6,7-10 times a day!
.....GO FIGURE! Seems to me, with so many ppl having this problem, That MS would have a solution!

I am getting a Fatal Exception Errors
0028:C0005338 in VxD VMM (01) + 00004338 and
0028:C0006EB2 in VxD VMM (01) + 00005EB2

I started getting these errors occassionally but over the past couple of weeks even more so to the point of now that I cannot even boot the computer without the errors except in safe mode where I have NOT managed to reproduce the errors.

My System specs are as follows

AMD K6-2/550
M577 TX-AGP PRO 2xAGP MMX Super 7 Motherboard
64mb PC100 SDRAM
Diamond 128-Bit A90 Speedstar AGP Video w/Savage 4 Pro + 16mb
floppy drive
CD-Rom
CD-RW
13.6gb HD
56k Motorola Modem

On boot up the processor is shown as a 531 CPU but it is jumpered as a 550 (5.5 x 100)
I am also running Win98 SE

I have already tried doing a complete reinstallation of everything but got the error again on the first boot up of windows during the installation phase.

I have had many suggestions and am looking for more so if anybody has a suggestion let me have it please because I am at my wits end with this one.

Some suggestions already received are as follows
BIOS updates, chipset drivers, latest drivers for all components, thermal issues, I have been told this is a video driver related problem but not how to fix, also that this is similar to the problem with Win95 and the AMD 350 CPUs and faster timing problem but that issue was suppose to be resolved in Win98, a suggestion to disable the external cache in the BIOS because of timing problems, something about installing AMD drivers before installing video drivers and the same with VIA drivers, other special settings in the BIOS, setting the display to normal VGA before installing video drivers, changing the CPU speed to a slower value and replacing the system RAM. I think that about covers it. If anybody has a shot in the dark or better yet an exact step by step fix it would be greatly appreciated. Reply here or contact me directly at jvriffel@mcmsys.com

Hello John,

I started getting the exact same error (your first error "0028:C0005338 in VxD VMM (01) + 00004338") starting about the time you posted here.

I get it at random times. In my case, it also happens just as it did with Taren (the original poster of this thread) when I try to install Win98 clean:

QUOTE

I ALWAYS get this when win98 is detecting my hardware, OR when its at the last step when its "finalizing settings" I DONT KNOW WHERE THE PROBLEM IS!

UNQUOTE

I'm wondering if anyone gave you any suggestions for this. I took out DIMMs and tried reinstalling Win98 with no help. I disabled my L1 cache on my AMD K6-2, resulting in a much lower speed, but the computer just rebooted by itself and ran scandisk, with no error. Everything else I tried I got the "error". I can't disable my onboard ESS Sound. It might be that, but it is working right now as I type this. My RAM and CPU passes "TUFFTEST", a low-level program that's designed to test hardware. So I'm at a loss. Anyone else here able to offer suggestions?

I'v had the same problem with my USB HP cd writer. i launched Adaptec ez cd creator,

happened when 1.something try to reach to
my cd writer.
And my solution is just press ESC key to get it
windows again and relaunched
the ez cd again and there's no anymore
error until i'v run the application the next
time
I just think that is all about USB Driver
but still don't know how to fix it.

I've noticed a trend in your problems. Most of you have Nvidia Chipsets and SoundBlaster cards. Have any of you tried switching to Nvidia's Detonator drivers? I tried a while ago and it really lowerd the amount of BSOD's.
Other things you should try are.
swithching memory around in the dimms, making sure your PC's cool enough, lowering the video exeleration. Keep track of your errors. Find when they seem to happen i.e. loading, exiting, starting, heavy use. And try to remember when they started. Did you get a new video card, cpu ect...
Hope this helps some one!

Seems to be a major problem with VXD and blue screens.. Check these 2 sites dealing with VXD

For WinMe VXD go here http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/a_dos_me/
For Win98 VXD go here
http://tweakhomepc.virtualave.net/update/vmm32vxd.html along the top of this page are numbers, click on them to see whats below.
Worth coping what i have put here for future reference if you ever get the blue screen of death with VXD problems..

Geoff

VMM32.VxD may be slowing your system
Advanced & Intermediate users

Windows 98 does not install all the device specific drivers and may, incorrectly, rely on the non-specific VMM32.VxD driver to manage different devices. An early report suggests that the newer Windows 98SE is also at fault.

A Virtual Device Driver (VxD) is a special type of Windows driver that allows Windows to perform functions at optimal CPU speed, and permits interaction with the hardware and internal Windows functions. 32 bit Virtual memory manager device(VMM32.VxD) is the VxD file that provides the primary functions (kernel) in Windows. VxDs sometimes conflict and can lock up the system.

Your system will be faster, and safer, by using the device specific VxDs. Specific drivers are always safer, and optimized for better performance.

--------------------
Checking your current drivers:

1. Go to
Start • Settings • Control Panel • System
• Device Manager • System devices

2. Highlight System board
and click Properties, Driver tab, Driver File Details

31 If you see C:\Windows\System\configmg.vxd you are using the correct VxD driver

32 If you see C:\Windows\System\vmm32.vxd (configmg.vxd) you are using the generic VMM32.VxD instead of configmg.vxd (Yes! It is telling which one you SHOULD use, but it is MISSING!)

4. Now check (as above) the other VxDs

5. Note the names of any missing specific VxDs

-----------------------

The correct VxDs:
The seven systems VxD drivers required are:

vcomm.vxd communications driver
vdd.vxd video drive device
vflatd.vxd video flat-frame buffer virtual device
vdmad.vxd DMA controller driver
vmouse.vxd mouse driver
configmg.vxd configuration manager for the motherboard
ntkern.vxd kernel driver used for the universal host controller

You may not need all of these.

-------------------

Installing the correct VxDs
The specific VxDs are in the CAB files on the Windows 98 CD-ROM
WIN98: Configmg.vxd driver is in Win98_47. The rest are in Win98_48.
WIN98 SE: The files are in Win98_53 and Win98_54.

1. Extract any missing VxDs to _\Windows\System
2. Close Windows normally, and Reboot
3. Check that the correct VxDs are now being used (in Device Manager)

Note: VxDs added after Windows installation are found in _\Windows SYSTEM\VMM32

Download these files
These VxDs have been added to the Download Page (VxDs from CD). Please ensure you select the correct version:
win98_vxd.zip for Windows98
win98_se_vxd.zip for Windows98SE

I also had the BSOD fatal exception error OE occurred at 0028:xxxxxxxx in VXD EMU10K1(01) and the patch at buyabs mentioned worked wonderfully. I wanted to add a note that I experienced the problem when I upgraded my processor from a Celeron 433 to a Celeron 667. This was the only hange to my system. I have a Microstar MS-6163 board, Sound Blaster Live, Voodoo 3000, 128 MB which worked great til the upgrade. It appears there is some incompatibility with the Intel Coppermine processors and the SB Live drivers.

I have a
SB Live Value
Geforce 2 MX 32mb (Detonator 3 drivers)
PIII 733mhz
Gigabyte Motherboard

I am running windows me and when i installed it had no problems, the first time i got a BSOD was immediately after installing my SB Live drivers, and rebooting. The EMU10K1 error kept appearing when ever i tried to play any sound.
I downloaded the newest drivers from creative's site and i never got the emu10k1 error again, but the video started to stuff up a lot, even with the new drivers. It erors mainly with 3d games and other 3d programs.
I tried the vxd fix - http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/a_dos_me/
this kept the blue screen away for awhile but as soon as i started a 3d game i got a vmm error

I don't no if i'm th eonly one but i've gotten more than just vmm errors, these are the most common - vredir, vcache, vmm

I really need help so can someone give me an answer, please????????????????
