start/run/msconfig. there you will find a startup tab with all the apps that startup when you erm, startup. uncheck the ones you don't need (look at the link Meisich gave u in the other post to see what is what)then the machine should start faster.

Hi Shmuel,

I love my machine booting without any crap which often comes with the intallation of any new modern software. Installing various games, media players and general applications can fill your start up location maps with paths to enable systray icons or allow a program to run blind when windows starts.

As Nick reported, the configuration utility has a startup tab which lists some items which a run on startup. Decide what you want to keep and uncheck the rest. If you just want the bare neccessities, all you need check is the 2 PowerProfile paths.

Of course there are other ways in which to increase performance. On a clean boot you should be expecting at least 90% system resourses. Fire up sysedit and check config.sys and autoexec.bat. These 2 files also contain applications which may be run on startup. Get rid of these if you so wish. You can also add the switch /testmem:off to the Himem.sys line (if it exists) in config.sys.

Fine to get shot of autoexec.bat and config.sys (unless you are a DOS user, other than for fixing things).

Just one possible exception, some AV checkers have a boot scan line in autoexec.bat which should obviously remain if applicable.
