I fear the worst! I cannot start my PC... even in safe mode. When the windows 98 loading page starts
I shortly later receive a failure loading gdi.exe you must reinstall windows message and my PC shuts itself off. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ok here is what happens next......

Method 2
Boot the computer with a Windows 98 Startup disk with CD-ROM support. (Or, choose Command Prompt Only from the Windows 95/98 Startup menu if you have real-mode CD-ROM drivers installed, or if you have a copy of the Windows source files on your hard disk).

NOTE: These instructions assume that your CD-ROM drive letter is drive D and that Windows is installed in the C:\Windows folder. If this is not the case, adjust the following instructions accordingly.
If the Fonts folder exists, just use the extract commands to extract the fonts into the folder.
Windows 98

md c:\windows\fonts

At this point I get a unable to create directory message

attrib +s c:\windows\fonts
extract /a d:\win98\win98_22.cab *.fon /l c:\windows\fonts
extract /a d:\win98\win98_22.cab *.ttf /l c:\windows\fonts
Reboot the computer.

Hi Chris, hello everyone

It sounds as though the fonts directory already exist and you just need to extract the files to the directory.

At C:\Windows\> type cd fonts
Does it show C:\Windows\Fonts\>

Hi Mary Beth, hello everyone

You need to copy the font files from the Win98 CD to the hard drive.

From the C:\> type
extract /a d:\win98\win98_22.cab *.fon /l c:\windows\fonts

Once that is done type:
extract /a d:\win98\win98_22.cab *.ttf /l c:\windows\fonts.

Best Regards,
Mesich

I'm having the same problem, but I've tried re-booting with my CD Rom in and my PC ignores it. I have a USB mouse, so I can't do much in Safe Mode.
I'm a real Newbie, and in need of step by step instructions, if you have the time and patience. I'm using a very old laptop to connect to you now.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mesic,

Update....I found an old mouse, so can now move around in Safe Mode. I ran a search and found the gdi file.

I have a split drive so C..is my main drive D=...my storage E=...my cd burner and F= another rom drive.

When you say "type", where should I be typing? In the RUN area? Sorry for the stupid questions, but I'm really nervous. Also, when I did try to do something with the file, I got a "RUNNING THIS IN MDOS MODE COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH...etc. Yikes

Thanks for being here. Will be checking in often.

Hi Mesich,

When you say type, where are you typing? In the RUN? I hooked up an old mouse, so I can navigate in Safe Mode. That's the only way the computer stays on Is that going to cause more problems?

Thanks for helping. Georgy

Hi Georgy, hello everyone,

Do you know if the Windows .cab files are on the hard drive?

Do you have a Win98 CD?

Hi,

I'm sorry, I didn't tell you I'm running Windows ME.

Again, the only way I can keep the computer on is by running it in safe mode. I checked and the only drives listed are A..C..and D (which is my storage). I've tried starting up with either the CD Rom in or the boot disc. It just shuts dowm..after giving me that message.

Sorry, again. Yes I have my CD and boot disc. I've been reading up on reinstalling Windows, but the computer doesn't recognize my drives.

As I'd mentioned, I've found the file in my C and also on the boot disc, but, as I'm in Safe ode, I get the message that doing anything MAY cause annomolies.

I do seem to be going on. Standing by...Georgy

Hi Georgy, hello everyone,

Let's first try and get the cdrom recognized by a bootdisk.

Go here and download the WinME OEM to the laptop.

Click on the downloaded file.

It will prompt you to insert a blank floppy and then will extract the files to the floppy disk.

Insert the floppy into the computer and start it up. You should be asked if you want to "Start with CDROM Support".
Select that option.

Watch the screen carefully and you should see the drive letter that is assigned to the cdrom.

Let me know how that goes and we shall proceed from there.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi Mesich

Thanks again for all your trouble!

Ok, I downloaded it to floppy, stuck it in the puter started it up...AND...it ran thru it's stuff, then gave me the message arror again and shut down.

I re-started in Safe Mod (cause that's the only way to get it to stay on), hit the icon for drive A, and all the info is ther. It seems to be the same as my floppy.

While waiting, I got a little brave and tried the "extract" from my floppy. No Go.

You are very welcome.

Did you download it directly to the floppy or to the desktop?

Hi Georgy, hello everyone,

How many files are on the floppy?

Is it just one or multiple files?

Hi,

Multiple. In fact, there are 28, starting with ASPI2DOS.SYS..thru to SETRAMD.

Am I up the creek?

Hi Georgy, hello everyone,

I don't think we are "up a creek".

When you insert the floppy and start the computer what is the full error message that you receive?

At what point, during the process, do you receive the error message?

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi Mesich,

The computer does it's start up, as usual, then it seems to hang. Then, a new screen comes on for a VERY brief instant. It says, at the top,

"failure loading gdi.exe. Reload Windows".

Then the computer just shuts off.

When I re-start it, it goes to Safe Mode.

Glad about the creek. To cold to go swimming!

Mesich, I"ll have to start this up again tomorrow. Unfortunately, I have a family commitment this evening. I'll be back here tomorrow. I'll check back just before I leave, in 1 hour.

Thanks again

Georgy

Hello again Mesich,

Back to Response # 5 (thank you!)
What do I do if I don't have my original Windows 98 CD? I know I have a Windows 95 and Windows ME from other systems, but no 98. What can I do in this case? I am not sure if the the Windows .cab files are on the hard drive. How could I find this out?

Thanks.
Mary Beth
