My P.C dosnt seem to shut down, I'm using win98se on a pakardbell 1ghz tunderbird with 256mhz of ram, Ive only just had NTL install a 512kb modem, it goes as far as the blue shutdown screen but then stops, and I have to just hold the botton down and turn it off, this is a really annoying niggle as I feel like I'm reaking my computer every time I turn it on, any help would be greatly appreceated.

Use this if you can't find the problem. It will shut your pc down quick.

Shutting Down with an Icon
How to shutdown your computer from a desktop icon. Note: This procedure does not work with Windows NT or 95.

Step 1. Right-click on your desktop for context window and select New; then click on Shortcut.

Step 2. Type the following line in the Command line space:
To Shut Down:
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.exe shell32,SHExitWindowsEx 1

To Log Off:
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.exe shell32,SHExitWindowsEx 0

To Restart:
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.exe shell32,SHExitWindowsEx 2
Note: two spaces in the command lines: The first between EXE and shell32, and the second between Ex and the numeral.

Step 3. Click on Next and type Shutdown, in place of Rundll.

Step 4. Click on Finish and an Icon will appear on the desktop labeled Shutdown.

Step 5. Double click on this Icon to shutdown your computer.

Richie, Check out the SHUTDOWN PROBLEMS link below my name(Homepage:)for a possible solution. Your problem could be one of many. If tou have your Anti-virus program set up to scan all floppies prior to shutting down disable that feature as it has been known to cause problems.

Hi Deke, A variation on your post, (I thought something looked different) these are the two I have (98SE);

Shutdown;
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.exe \system\user.exe,exitWindows

Restart;
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.exe USER.EXE,EXITWINDOWSEXEC
