Extracting ''Explorer.exe'' from Win98SE CD-ROM
----------------
In the Windows directory of my Windows 98SE-based computer, there is a 176 KB (180,224 bytes to be exact) file named "Explorer.exe" which is described as Windows Explorer with a file version of 4.72.3110.1 when I right-click on it and view its Version tab.Lately, I have been getting incomprehensible Explorer-related pop-up error messages.
I happen to have an original copy of the Windows 98SE CD-ROM. When I searched the disc for the same "Explorer.exe" file in my Windows directory, nothing came up. I have a feeling that it is contained in one of the numerous .cab files I noticed on the disc.
I would appreciate it if someone could provide the name of the exact .cab file that contains the "Explorer.exe" file I am seeking. BTW, I have a separate .cab file extractor.
Ultimately, I am looking to replace via pure DOS the possibly corrupted "Explorer.exe" file in my Windows directory with a fresh copy from my Windows 98SE CD-ROM (copied onto a floppy disk). Hopefully, this will put an end to those annoying Explorer-related pop-up error messages I've been getting.
Thanks for your help,
Clifford

I do NOT want to use System File Checker-- in fact, I didn't install it when I first installed the Windows 98SE OS and I don't wish to explain why. I just want to extract the desired "Explorer.exe" file manually.
If anyone can help me in the manner I desire as stated in my original post above, please do.
Thanks,
Clifford

There is a file called extract.exe in the Win98SE folder on the CD. At a command prompt type this:
extract /A /L c:\temp win98_21.cab explorer.exe
This will search all the cab files in which Windows stores its files and extract explorer.exe to the c:\temp folder. You can use any folder you want to extract to.

Clifford, Here's the info for Explorer.exe in Windows 98SE.
explorer.exe WIN98_45.CAB
You may want to bookmark the link below which gives you the location of all Windows 98SE files. It takes a while to load so be patient(at least on dial-up connection).

Hope this helps.

For future reference, to find a file on the cd in FIND; under "Named" type in *.cab and under "Containing text" type in the file name.

the "CAB" files are compressed. That is why you need SFC or something else to install it. Maybe "WINZIP" will uncompress it.

Yeah Winzip lets you do it (does on mine anyway). You can use Dan's FIND technique on the Windows CD and then double clicking the correct CAB should open it in Winzip. You can drag the relevant file out of the Winzip box ready to put where it is needed. Works OK on Winzip 8.1
Extract is the correct way through DOS.

Correct, I forgot to mention that winzip (and others) open cab files. I guess I just assumed everyone nowadays has ~some~ utility for compressed files.
