I have the same problem. I think I have tracked it down to a corrupt registry but I dont have a good back up to restore. For those of you who do try running this from a c:prompt
scanreg /restore then pick a backup that is good. I have reloaded windows but that doesn't work either...anyone have any ideas?

This problem is caused by your USB port. Try disabling it in your BIOS, boot in safe mode, delete the USB devices from your system and then reboot normally. I don't know how to fix the USB though. Anyone have any ideas?

"I have just recently fell into this same error, very simular to all the other messages pertaining to the "original" posted message with a very slight variation." The page fault module address is: 0167:00401f31.

I have tried everything posted here plus several instances of extracting fresh file from Windows '98 CD, but still can't bring the machine up past the wallpaper and a cursor? "Does anyone have a solution to this problem yet?" I also have a useless PC..."
Pleas HELP!

Argh-At least I was able to find some people with the same problem. There's nothing in support.microsoft.com about that 0177:00401f31... I shall try some of the solutions here and post back if any of them work (I cannot even get into safemode without getting that blasted 0177 garbage).!!

After some research, a number of sources led me to believe that any number of a few files could have mismatched versions. It turns out my problem was caused by my graphics driver installation--it placed a version of COMCTL32.dll, incompatible with Internet Explorer 5, in my windows\system folder. I ended up solving my particular problem by extracting a "new" version from my windows update folder in DOS mode (extract /a setupw95.cab comctl32.dll).
Hope this helps.

I have the same problem: Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.exe at 0167:00401f31 after uninstalling some disc cleanup trial programs using Add/Remove Plus, which advised me some shared files "were no longer being used by other programs" -- so, like an idiot I selected "yes" to delete them. On restart, I got the big RED X: "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor." Does anyone know if "the program vendor will help?" Can ANYONE help? Please

When I try to start the computer I get the error message "EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.exe 023f:00402541...." The windows User Interface won't load and I am left helpless. Please help. I have my computer networked and can luckily access my hard drive through the network. I can get to my files but i can't load windows on my own computer. Please email me with any suggestions.

I had this same problem and tried everything I could think of. I was able to get in with safe mode. I went into my Windows update file in Windows explorer, opened up SETUP95W.CAB and extracted the file MSVCRT.DLL to the Windows/system directory. I had installed a graphics driver that had installed an incompatible version of that file.

Same problem!!! at 0167: 00401f31
Yes, I now have a useless computer. My mistake... trying to upgrade from Windows 95 which barely works to Windows 98 which doesn't work at all. A waste of $100 for the upgrade too!

Same problem, at both 0167:00401f31 and 017f:00401f31. I am sorry to hear that reinstalling Windows will not work because that was my last resort. This happened as I was installing a game for my son, although the computer would "hang" upon start up periodically. Unlike Michelle, above, I cannot get it started in Safe Mode, only command lines.

I came, I saw, I kicked its butt!!! Check out Microsoft KB documents Q175930 and Q129605 for a solution. Read those and note that if you are extracting from CAB files on your hard drive (which you would do if you are running IE 5.0 or 5.5) through DOS, your directory will probably be c:\window~1. The file you need is shdocvw.dll and it is found in IE_1.CAB of IE_S1.CAB if you are using IE 5.0 (extract IE_S1.CAB to a directory first, then use extract to extract the shdocvw.dll file)and in IE_2.CAB of IE_S2.CAB if you are using IE 5.5. If you are running Win 95 or Win 98SE or Win ME, they have instructions for those, also.

Yeah, Baby!!!

I had this problem going from ie4.0 to ie5.5 in windows 98. Here is how I recovered.

-Booted into command prompt holding cntl key at boot
-went into c:\windows\command and ran edit
-editted the system.ini in c:\windows
-change the shell from explorer.exe to winfile.exe
-reboot and the pc will look like windows 3.1
-reinstall ie 5.5 from cd by clicking on the ie5setup.exe on the cd (you may have to play with typical vs full install)
-reboot as suggested but boot in SAFE MODE by holding cntl
-once in winfile edit the system.ini again and change shell back to explorer.exe
-reboot making sure again to go into safe mode
-windows will grind for a while changing settings
-once in normal desktop shutdown
-reboot in normal mode
-windows will update drivers quickly then all clear

NOTE: At some point I also updated the demon dll's (msvcrt, msvcrt20 and msvcrt40) from another machine.

After installing added memory to my computer, I received an error message stating "EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.exe at 015f:00401F31. When I booted my computer, all i would get is my wallpaper. No icons or taskbar. I re-booted my computer, held the control key and got to the command prompt.I edited the system.ini file under c:\windows\command and replaced the winfile.exe where explorer.exe was. Saved it and rebooted my computer. Reloaded win98 second edition and voila', it worked!
Thanks to Brian for the edit of the system.ini trick! That was KEY!
