explorer.exe invalid page fault

Upon start up of my windows second edition OS the background loads and everything appears normal untill explorer.exe loads which then brings up: explorer caused an invalid page fault in module explorer.exe then gives numbers 017f:00401f31.
I have tried scan reg and restoring the old registry but the dates do not date back far enough for this to be successfull.
