Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.exe at 017f:00401f31
1. Restart the computer to a command prompt: Press the CTRL key while you start the computer, and then select Command Prompt Only from the Windows Startup Menu.
2. At the command prompt, type edit c:\windows\system.ini, and then press the ENTER to open the System.ini file in MS-DOS Editor.
3. To navigate through MS-DOS Editor, use the arrow keys. Under the section labeled [Boot], change the following line
4. shell=Explorer.exe
to:
5. shell=Winfile.exe
6. Press ALT+F to scroll down to Exit, and then press ENTER. Select Yes to save the Windows\System.ini file, and to return to the command prompt.
7. Restart the computer. The operating system starts Windows Explorer File Manager.
8. PC will look like windows 3.1
9. Getting Internet Explorer from a free CD
Did you know that most AOL CDs you get free everywhere contain the full setup files for Internet Explorer?! Wow! Saves time downloading, especially at 28.8. Plus you don't need to use the live download/setup process. When you load the CD and it starts up automatically. Just exit and look at it with Windows Explorer file manager. It shouldn't be too difficult to find the setup programs that install IE. To locate the IE setup program that installs in on your computer, right click on the drive and select "Find". Type "ie*.exe" (without the quotes) to locate the IE setup files. For example, IE version 5 will have a file called IE50.exe. You may notice there are several setup files. One will be for the online service. Then there will be others in directories with names matching the version for various operating systems, such as Windows 98 or Windows 2000.
Run the setup file that matches your system to install Internet Explorer. Have no fear - the first thing the setup program does is announce the version number - make sure it's a higher number than any Internet Explorer version you already have installed (no need to uninstall an older version). If you install a new version "over" the old one, all your options, Favorites, etc. will be preserved. When you get to a choice of Standard install or custom install, you might want to select "custom" to see what choices are available. Any components you already have that are newer will be diplayed in BOLD so you shouldn't install these.
10. Repeat steps 1 through 6, with the following exception: In step 3, change the line "shell=progman.exe" to "shell=explorer.exe".
11. Restart Windows (windows will update drivers and then clear)Hope it works for you

Interesting info.
Am I right to assume that although the error message refers to Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) it is actually caused by Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe)?
I think the setup file for IE5 is usually ie5setup.exe rather than ie50.exe
Anyone not familiar with File Manager should note that files will appear in their short DOS format (8 characters max).

Cheers mate, your post really helped me out, but I had to copy explorer.exe from c:\windows to c:\ before I could boot up normally.
