Comment:
I was going into IExplorer and it kept having an error occur immediately after startup. No big deal I told myself and decided to restart the computer. To my dismay, before any of the icons appeared on the background, an error box popped up saying that my C:/WINDOWS/EXPLORER.EXE IS CORRUPT and that I need to reinstall Windows 98. So this is my problem. Do I need to reformat it as I fear? If so, where can I get the necessary files for a startup disk (ie cd-rom drivers, etc.)? Do I have any other options? The only things that work right now are my command prompts - complete with d: drive and a: drive. Fortunately, I've been able to copy my really important files but I'm a student and I can't let this go on for too long. Any help would be really appreciated. Many Thanks, Spencer
You shouldn't need to reinstall all of Windows. If you cannot just reinstall Internet Explorer, then here is my suggestion. You overlap your existing version of Windows 98. Instead of Formatting, just install Windows 98 as usual. Doing this fixes any errors in Windows and means you do not loose any of your data.
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I don't have the Windows 98 Upgrade CD which really makes it difficult to just put the CD in and run Setup - since it doesn't work if an operating system is already installed (a Windows OS, that is).
Can you get to Control Panel, add remove programs and try removing Internet Explorer? It will give you the option to Repair it. See if that will fix the problem.
STOP I think the responders have gone off on the wrong tak. It's quite true that Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer are linked but you quoted the file for "Windows Explorer". The one for "Internet Explorer" is iexplore.exe and it is NOT in c:\windows.
All you may need is someone to send you explorer.exe and you can copy it over. You will need to state the file version/date. If it happens to be explorer.exe dated 23 April 1999 (for W98SE) then e-mail me and I will send it. If it is another version I feel sure someone can oblige if you spell it out. I may even have it on a CD somewhere myself.
This is a common problem when upgrading from one O\S to another. Use your start up disk and choose to start computer with CD ROM Support to get access to your drives. Do a search on the root of your C: drive and see if you have a file called Explorer.exe. If so, rename it Explorer.old. You now need to extract the explorer.exe file from your windows cd and put it into the windows folder on your hard disk. You can do this by typing ext at the command prompt and following the instructions on screen.
Thanks to all the people that helped me out but now I have a slightly different problem. Explorer still won't start up but now I don't get the message telling me to reinstall Windows. It says that there is an invalid page fault in module SHDOC401.DLL and persists in telling me that a few times before it finally just sits there with my background staring at me and resigning me to accepting my laptop as nothing but a several thousand dollar piece of electronic art. The only thing that I did was replace the explorer.exe file and nothing more.
Can you boot in safe mode? Hit F8 during bootup & choose safe mode. Have you ran scandisk & scanreg /restore at the dos prompt? For reference the shdoc401.dll file is an IE Explorer doc viewer file, I don't quite understand the message to reinstall win for that.
With all your problems, why not uninstall Win98 and return to how things were before you upgraded ( Win95 ? ) Then upgrade to Win98 sometime when you feel like it.
