Hi all, when I started my notebook this morning, only half the desktop icons loaded and I couldn,t use/access anything. The Task Manager says "Explorer(Not responding)" and sometimes it also said "Msgsrv32(Not responding)". My mouse pointer changes to the 'hour glass' when I move it over the task-bar. The network card and USB mouse still work ok. I get the same fault if I remove these. Everything(except I/O hardware) appears to work ok when I start in 'Safe Mode'. CDROM works in "DOS Mode'. Ran sfc and found setupx.dll file was corrupt and restored it. Now all icons load on the desktop but I still can't access anything. The "Explorer (Not responding)" still occurs.
I re-installed Windows over the top using the original "setup and CAB files" in C:\windows\options\cab on HDD...same problem.
I re-installed Windows over the top using the original CDROM...same problem.
I ran scanreg/fix in DOS mode...same problem.
Any ideas? I don't really want to re-format. Apart from losing all that is installed, I'm afraid I'll still have the same fault!
Thanks

Is it Msgsrv32 or Msgsvr32 (r and v transposed) that's not responding? Msgsrv32 is a legitimate windows file. Msgsvr32 is a virus file.
For some reason SFC always shows setupx.dll as being corrupted.
A scanreg/restore from dos may have helped but since you've reinstalled it may be too late to try.
Run scandisk--thorough--and then defrag.

Then because appears ok in safe mode: go to msconfig and uncheck all startup items, remove everything from StartUp folder and rename autoexec.bat/config.sys.
Reboot and see if stuff works. If so, add them back/reboot one at a time.
Best

I would suggest trying a scanreg /restore.
An install 'on top' might not affect the Registry backups.

"Install on top" will not solve this. A full format and reinstall solves all Windows problems, for a while. If it bothers you enough, that is the ultimate solution.

GXI Man, if you were refering to my post, I was not suggesting an install on top. Geoff had already tried that. Refer to the original post.
Sorry, I do not check for private messages

No I was giving a suggestion to solve the original problem.

Thank you all for your responses.
Msgsrv32 or Msgsvr32 could have been a typo error. I haven't seen this since I replaced the setupx.dll file.
Scanreg/restore to a date prior to my problem failed! Scanreg could not do it. Other dates worked but didn't fix my problem.
Ran scandisk--thorough--and then defraged.
Used msconfig and unchecked all startup items, remove everything from StartUp folder and renamed autoexec.bat and config.sys. Rebooted only to have the same problem!
Looking more like a full format and reinstall is on its way!

That solves most Windows problems....for a while.

Not that it helps your problem, but among other things, msgsrv32 registers dll files in the registry. SFC always seems to show setupx.dll is corrupted, even after a fresh installation. But you apparently fixed a msgsrv32 error by replacing setupx.dll. Maybe the problem SFC finds with setupx.dll is due to it not being properly registered.
Another thing you might try. Use SFC to extract a new version of msgsrv32.exe. Maybe the problem was with that file.

Have you done a good virus and malware scan? Also try temporarily using a PS/2 or serial mouse instead of the USB. I think I recall a similar problem related to a USB mouse or KB.

Hi again DAVEINCAPS.
My virus protection didn't find anything!
I disconnected the USB mouse long ago and have just been using the IBM trackball!Cheers

I can't think of anything else. It's one of those problems without a specific fix. You could try googling "explorer not responding" and see if anything helpful turns up.

Reinstall..the ultimate fix!
