Every time, I start up windows my wallpaper disappears, then re-appears. When I click on the IExplorer icon on my desktop, nothing happens. When I press ctrl, alt, delete Explorer is not responding. So, I highlight Explorer and I press end task. The wallpaper disappears then the white screen appears that gives the option to restore my active wallpaper. I don't know what's wrong? If there's someone who has any tips, please share them. thanx! A lil' info : internet provider is comcast. running win 98 .

You must have some malicious software.
1st thing go to windows upate and get all critical updates
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/2nd thing download the new IE Explorer

Do you have a good hardware firewall? I recommend Linksys befsx41. -- with rising threats to PC's you must have this MOST IMPORTANT WITH ALLWAYS ON INTERNET
Do you have a software anti-virus program?
AVG is great and free.Do you have a software firewall?
Zone alarm firewall is terrific and free + it has built in anti spyware protection.
Only use one software based firewall.Do you have these programs?
Ad Aware
Spybot Search and destroy. These programs are compatible with win98 & can be found at

CCleaner is THE BEST if you download it and use it you will thank me forever. It is compatible with win98. I recommend scanning with default settings and use the Cleaner and Issues tabs. Delete everything it finds. I never backup registry issues it wants to delet and I have never had a problem.

My IE6 just bombed out on me.........again.
Thank God for Mozilla!! Try it and you'll never go back :] Just type Mozilla or Firefox in Google.nellwyn

When someone has a problem it is no help to suggest an alternative browser. This is not a cure and could simply add further problems until the computer is fixed. I don't believe this problem is related to browsers anyway.Once the problem has been eliminated then it is up to the poster if he/she then wishes to try an alternative to IE.

I detect some confusion here.explorer.exe is an important Windows file and starts "Windows" Explorer (not IE). The Explorer entry you see in Ctrl-Alt-Del has nothing to do with Internet Explorer.
iexplore.exe is the main file for Internet Explorer. This does not normally show in Ctrl-Alt-Del.
iexplorer.exe is a nasty that needs eliminating. It is trying to disguise itself as a valid file.
It seems Windows itself is in trouble. Some nasty as given in #2 is among the possibilities.
You could also try scanreg /fix from true DOS or scanreg /restore (fix rebuilds your current registry and restore gives you the option to restore a registry just before problem happened).

apologies to both DerekW and to you Azreal, hope this works for you. I'm learning a lot from this thread as well.

No problem. I wasn't knocking your opinion about other browsers - maybe later...DerekW

Computing.Net actually provides a link to various programs (security tools) at the top of most forum pages here - might save some of you folks a lot of typing.
I've found that turning off the 'active desktop' feature can frequently clear up desktop display problems
Computers in the future may have only 1,000 vacuum tubes and perhaps only weigh 1 1/2 tons.

I guess you have Googled into this post, which is on the W95/98 forum and appears to be about Internet Explorer rather than Windows Explorer. It is as well to learn the huge difference between these two.As your post appears to be unrelated you would be better to post a new one on XP forum (top left of page). That way you should get immediate attention to your own specific problem.
I'm not that familiar with XP but the first step would be to try IE Repair. Presumably if you double click Control Panel/Add-Remove/"MS Internet Explorer & Tools" entry it will give you the option (as it does on W95/98). If not use Google sring "XP IE Repair" and that might find the details - just guessing.
