ok first of all my norton antivirus (2004 i think) was nearing its expiration so i decided i was going to dump it and switch to avast or avg. so i go to uninstall it which it did fine then i rebooted like it asked. (not sure if this is important but when it rebooted a ms dos or whatever box titled matcli appeared then dissapeared) ok but my problem is that when i open explorer i get an error "microsoft internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close'' it has a check box saying "restart MIE" but this brings it straight back to the error again. the error signature says appname: ieplore.exe appver 6.0.2800.1106 modname: nisshext.dll modver 8.0.0.64 offset: 000084cd i have ie6 btw any suggestions

It's typical for problems to occur when uninstalling norton products. You can download a registry fix here. Just scroll down to where it says:

Procedure 1: Removal of Norton AntiVirus 2004's registry entries

You may be able to install it from safe mode if you can't get to the desktop in normal mode.

The matcli message probably isn't related but it's not a necessary program. Other sites indicate it can be removed by going to add/remove programs and uninstalling 'HP instant support'.

If neither of those help you may need to use the repair option for IE in add/remove programs or reinstall it.

Yeah, the only file in that download folder is RNAV2003.exe which is only for 2003 and earlier versions. The only other thing I could find for removing later versions is here.

It says it requires IE in order to work. So it may be a catch 22--you can't run the fix because your IE doesn't work and IE won't work until you run the fix.

So you may need to try the IE repair option I mentioned above or reinstall IE.

If others have any experience with your problem hopefully they'll post in as I'm out of suggestions.

There won't be an option to reinstall in add/remove. You'll need to reinstall from a separate source. I use the download for IE 5.5 sp2 here:

http://www.citynet.net/supportdownload.cfm

If you install that one it will create a citynet DUN plugin. To remove it open 'my computer' and open 'dial-up networking'. (If the connection box opens just hit 'cancel'.) Then right click on the city net connection and choose 'delete'.

Or, most of the ISP installation disks, like AOL, have IE 6 on them. If you get one of those, put it in the cdrom, let it spin up and then close the installation window when it opens. Then browse the cd and see if you can locate the IE installation file.

For example, I have an AOL 9 disk. In the AOL90 folder on it is a file named MSIE6198.exe that must be the the IE installation file. The AOL90 folder is hidden. To be able to see it, from the toolbar in 'my computer' choose VIEW--FOLDER OPTIONS--VIEW and then put a check in 'show all files' under 'hidden files'.

I assume you're running 95 or 98 since you posted here. I don't think you can install IE 6 on 95 so it'd be best to use the citynet download. If you're running 2000 or XP there's a different installation file, at least on my AOL disk. It's called MSIE612K.exe.
