windows will not fully load up. explore causes a fault and is shut down. norton crash guard says "OleMainThreadWndName" .shutting down and restarting only begins the cycle again. any way to fix this with out losing unsaved information on the hard drive??

first thing is to remove norton crash guard...in my experience it causes more crashes than it stops!!!! if you're system is crashing THAT much then sort the problem out properly!!!

anyway, i take it you know how to start in safe mode then remove crash guard from start up?

Running windows 'Setup' to reinstall windows 'On top' is a pretty safe way to try and recover a system without loss of data. It takes about an hour and quite often fixes problems, especially with Explorer.

You are getting some pretty good advice regarding crash guard. Norton does not even make it anymore; Reason = It crashed too many programs. You must have a 2000 or 01 edition as that was the last one. The best advice is get rid of it, it causes crashes in just about any program you can name.

You could do a prior registry date restore, prior to occurence in win98, that would resolve problem.

Yep, I used to have Crashguard and it "caused" no end of crashes! Honestly it's best to get shot of it.
