When I click on any of the icons on my desktop,I get a message box reading an illegal action has occurred.Under "details" it states the following;"explorer caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> @ 0000:010032dc and then displays a "hat-full" of numbers! Recently my cd-rom door kept opening without prompt and I searched these forums for a like problem.Since most said that may be the rseult of a virus I ran the following;Hijack this,A squared,AVG and that fixed the rom door problem (so far ). Has something I've done caused the "illegal operation" problem,if not, does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do.I'm a novice user so please try to use "laymans" terms in your advice.Thnx,
There's a possibility it is a registry screw-up. Shut down and Restart in MS-DOS. When it has finished type scanreg /fix (hit Enter key) and it will rebuild your registry. You can restart windows by typing exit.
Thanks Derek,I'll try that.I didn't mention this before however I have been using CCleaner this past week,is that a good/bad utility in your opinion and could it have caused this? Will let you know shortly if your suggestion worked...you have been a big help in the past & I appreciate it
ok Derek,I tried the rebuild,my comp states it was successfuly done however when I click on any icons, again,it does the same thing. For an instant, everything on my screen disappears (except my background) then comes back! Danny
Unfortunately the error message doesn't give us much to go on and these general hiccups can be a bit tricky to find.
There's no specific reason to blame the registry for this but it still might be. Repeat what I gave before but use scanreg /restore instead. IF (and only if) it shows a date between when you sorted out your last problem and this one came along then it is worth restoring that copy to see if it helps.
If that gets you knowhere then you can easily check to see if it is a particular program starting up which is causing this. Type msconfig in the Run box and look at the startup tab. Note down all the items that are ticked, then temporarily untick all of them except ScanRegistry.
If that helps we can take it further, otherwise put all the ticks back again. You can also temporarily untick everything in autoexec.bat and config.sys (they are only for DOS applications) but I'd be a bit surprised if anything there is causing the problem.
Hey DEREK I THINK I found the problem this a.m.! It seems it must be AVG anti-virus or Adobe Type Mngr (Dr Watson says Adobe TM has altered Windows system files)At any rate,I've disabled both and the "illegal operation" warning has not returned, also everything seems to be working fine so far. So I guess I'll bring each program back on-line to see... DEREK you,and others, have helped me many times and I thank you for your assistance again !
