I am recently updated my explorer with the auto-update and after I restarted my computer the shlwapi.dll was missing. I went into DOS and copied the dll in. Now i get a message:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.exe at 017f:00401F31

None of the icons or any part of windows will load and I am left with that error.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Try this:

1. Reboot the PC and while the computer screen stats to flicker , repeatedly tap the CTRL key at every second or so till the screen displays Win98 Startup menu

2. Select the Command Prompt Only option and press [ENTER]

3. At C:\> prompt rename the file explorer.exe as Explorer.old and press the [ENTER]key as shown below:

C:\>REN C:\EXPLORER.exe EXPLORER.OLD [ENTER]

4. Press CTRL+ALT+Delete to Restart the PC

Hope this helps

Before reinstalling Windows, you may try Scanreg /Restore in Command Prompt only to Restore a backed up Registry before you performed the Update that seemed to have triggered the problem

1. Access Command Prompt Only as above.

2. At C:\> Prompt type cd windows\command and press the [ENTER] key. It will look like this:

C:\>CD WINDOWS\COMMAND

3. Next, type the scanreg /restore command and press [ENTER] . It will look like this:

C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND>SCANREG /RESTORE [ENTER]

4. From the Microsoft Registry Checker select and RESTORE a backed up Cab file from a list of maximum 5 calendar dates , a date earlier than but closer to the date of the problem.
5. Restart the PC pressing CTRL+ALT+Delete when a "Good Registry has been Restored " is displayed.

Copy explorer.exe to c:\windows\system from your Windows CD in DOS.

shlwapi.dll is not an original Windows CD file (it gets updated to a higher version, with IE I assume).

If you can get to Windows go to Control Panel/Add-Remove, double click Microsoft Internet Explorer & Tools and select the IE Repair option if available.
