I have been receiving this error very regularly in Explorer. I have done some downloading like Real G2 Player, Media Player 6, Service pack for Office, Quick time. I don't know what is causing this problem, but it is very annoying. It removes all the icons from the near the clock after i close the error message, however the modem still remains connected to the ISP. Is their a fix to this problem. i have a AMD k6-2 350, 64 Mb ram.
Thanks for any help..

It is March 4, 1999, and started having this same problem. I have the ATI Expert 98, but I have not downloaded Real-G2. I did download Windows Media Player 6.0

I have the feeling the problem relies in an ATI & Microsoft incompatibility.

I'm having this problem a lot as well, especially when I move a window (showing contents as it's moving). I think it's a ATI driver error, try downloading a new driver for your video card.

I found that the problem is, some web pages are being displayed in 16 million colours, typical ATI software is defaulting to 32 million, some how this is causing a fault in the MACXW4.DRV. I set my display to 16 million and have not had a problem since. Let me know if this works for anyone else.

Interesting, most of them. I agree with daves 3-13-99 entry. If you go to "display properties/settings/advanced/adapter you will find the macxw4.drv referenced. I am going to try lowering my performance "hardware accelerator" first. Then see if it clears up. Iall check back in later.

Hi,

I also experienced the GPF in MACXW4.DRV when hitting certain web pages using IE 4.0. I'm using a Dell XPS R450 with the ATI Xpert98 AGP 2X set to true color (32 bit) at 1024 X 768.

ATI's web page support offered no clue to the cause or a solution yet if you read the description under -

Settings - Advanced - Performance - Graphics Hardware acceleration

In the desktop properties, you'll find it states very clearly:

"Basic accelerator functions: Use this setting to correct more severe problems, such as unexpected errors in programs."

I'm at a loss as to why ATI is unable to support their own hardware's functionality. They've really dropped the ball on this one!

After searching the web I found numerous references to this problem from many users of several different models of ATI video adapters. The problem seems to be very wide spread.

Thanks to your chat and the input from your readers, I was able to go to the above property and set the slide bar to the first tick to the right of "None".

Bingo! No more problem.

I thank you for providing the user community with the means to help themselves when obvious manufacturer incompetence leaves them in the lurch.

..... Steve

I am a dell technician and I have run into this problem with customers. The problem is that the driver that is installed from windows 98 is no good. You need to get an updated driver for the rage card. You can look up the version of the driver in device manager. If it is version 4.10 then it is the bad one. You need to get version 5.2 or something like that. They have an updated driver on dell web site. Post if it fixes or doesnt fix problem.

I wanted to try newer drivers per Gary, but already have build 4.10.2278 of W95-2278.exe dated 12-10-97. This seems to be the latest and it seems unlikely that there will ever be another. Still, I will try a re-load of the drivers and then think about putting together a new PC. I guess it is time… As a work-around, I will reduce the video acceleration. Thanks for all the useful information!!

I found that this problem may be fixed if you use the 16 bit setting on the video settings

I often too get that error, and now that I have lowered hardware acceleration it is a lot better. Also, real player g2 may have something to do with this problem. Can anyone tell me what hardware acceleration does exactly...eg pros and cons? Email to fletch@fletchus.com if possible. Cheers
