Major problem here. My explorer crashes every few seconds. It gives an error message like this:
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module at 0000:0043dcfa.
Registers:
EAX=00000000 CS=0177 EIP=0043dcfa EFLGS=0001026
....etc...I am assuming this program I downloaded caused the problem because the program replaced a bunch of files:
OLEAUT32.DLL
OLEPRO32.DLL
ASYCFILT.DLL
STDOLE2.TLB
MSVBVM60.DLL
COMCAT.DLL
MFC42.DLL
MSCOMCTL.OCX
COMPLG32.OCX
VBAR332.DLL
MSSTDFMT.DLL
WININET.DLL
MSWINSCK.OCX
MSWINSCK.DEP
MSINET.OCXNow, should I extract all the files from the original Win98 CD and replace the files? I mean, Explorer even crashes in SAFE MODE, so it's giving me a hard time. I probably cannot copy/paste, so I might have to do this in DOS.
So what step should I take?
Thanks!

Have you tried restoring the registry to a version before you downloaded this program? Try going to the Dos prompt (C:\) and type in:
scanreg \restore. You should get a list of 5 dates, pick the earliest date before the problem started and then click on "restore"If that doesn't help, go ahead and reload Windows on top of itself, I've done this and it repaired and replaced the damaged files and I didn't lose a thing. I did have to redo some of my custom changes to Windows, but it was no big deal.
Hope this helps,

extract a/ e:\win98\base4.cab mfc42.dll /l c:\windows\system
Repeat as required for each file in list above.Or runs setup and reinstall Windows
You pick, you may end up doing the latter anyways if the first one fails to correct the issues.
By the way, what program did you download?
Could try step by step start-up to see where its coughing up!

what program was it?
how do you know it replaced these files?
was it an installshield-like install?
if so,odds are good that the dlls are newer. you DO NOT want to reload them from the windows cd. over time, with upgrades and installs, the dlls on the windows cd are OLD!sounds like foistware or a virus.
run a virus scan
and download and run adware

Hmmm's is good advice, if you've had your current version of Windows for any length of time, then many of the Dlls are probably updated. But if you've just installed or if it's a new system then it won't hurt to replace the files with Windows defaults. But try the virus route first.

Okay I messed around and replaced most of the DLLs I could and reinstalled Internet Explorer 6 (I cancelled the installation half-way the other time). Not sure if it was this download manager program or Internet Explorer 6 that was causing the problem. Diskeeper might have caused the problem, too.
Now I'm really considering purging this hard drive and using the other system with a clean install of Win98 and XP. :)
