Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 5 for Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 95

SYMPTOMS
When you start your Compaq computer after you upgrade Internet Explorer, you may receive the following message:

Explorer: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If you click Details, the following error message is displayed:
Explorer caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Shell32.dll

CAUSE
This issue can occur if the [Boot] section of the System.ini file contains the following line:

Shell=c:\compaq\cpqshell.exe
NOTE: The Cpqshell.exe file is incompatible with the Shell32.dll file that is included in Internet Explorer.

RESOLUTION
To resolve the issue, change the Shell= line in the System.ini file to Shell=explorer.exe. To do this, use the following steps:

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad.

On the File menu, click Open.

In the File name box, type c:\windows\system.ini, and then click Open.

Click Search, and then click Find.

In the Find what box, type shell=, and then click Find Next.

Type a semi-colon (;) at the beginning of the Shell= line, and then create a new line.

On the new line, type shell=explorer.exe, click Save on the File menu.

Restart your computer.

MORE INFORMATION
This issue has been known to occur when you upgrade Internet Explorer 4.0 to Internet Explorer 5 with the Compaq shell installed.

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to open My Computer, Control Panel, or the Printers folder, you may receive one of the following error messages:


Explorer caused a page fault in module Shell32.dll.

Explorer caused a divide error in module Shell32.dll.

CAUSE
These error messages can occur if you are running a version of Plug-In for Windows (Plugin.exe) earlier than version 2.5. Versions of Plug-In for Windows earlier than version 2.5 are not compatible with Windows.

RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, disable Plug-In for Windows. To do so, remove Plugin.exe from the Startup folder or from the "load=" line in the Win.ini file in the Windows folder, and then restart your computer.

To resolve this problem, contact the software's manufacturer to inquire about obtaining an updated version of the program that is compatible with Windows.

Burn It and Key Disk Programs Not Compatible with Windows 98

SYMPTOMS
When you right-click a file or folder after upgrading to Windows 98, you may receive the following error message:

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Shell32.dll

CAUSE
This issue can occur if either of the following programs are installed on your computer:


Synchronys Softcorp Burn It


Synchronys Softcorp Key Disk


These programs are not totally compatible with Microsoft Windows 98.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, contact Synchronys Softcorp to inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue.

To work around this issue, uninstall these programs.

SYMPTOMS
When you are using the Novell IntraNetWare client (Client32 version 3.x) to log on and off a Novell NetWare 5 network, you may receive the following error message:

EXPLORER caused an Invalid Page Fault in SHELL32.DLL at 015f:7fce85c0

CAUSE
This error message is caused by a problem in the handling of the SHChangeNotify API by the Windows 98 version of the Shell32.dll file. This problem is known to occur at times when you are using the Novell IntraNetWare client in conjunction with the Novell NAL Explorer provided by Novell as part of Novell's ZENworks utility for NetWare 5.

RESOLUTION
A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
