I am able to open an .exe file in Notepad, but not in Wordpad. Is that uncommon? Thanks,

True, but there's a program called Wrdpatch which enables you to look at exe files with Wordpad.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to open an EXE file in either one, but you should be able to do it with both.
