exe file changed to lnk extension

Specs: Windows98 Se, 128

Hi Everyone, i wonder if anyone out there can help me !!
My p.c has all gone wrong and i don't know what to do. When i open the p.c, all my original files have changed to Mozilla exe file changed to lnk extension??

When i click the icons, it does not work or launch any programs. My Adaware does not run nor hardly anything else on the system.

When you right click the icons and go to properties, the file type under the general tab is a Lnk File instead of an application file.

It used to be an application file but now it all changed into lnk file. So even if you rename the file it will not changed the file extension or revert back to an application file.

It's weird because all the files found on my desktop and programs menu have a .lnk extension.

I was hoping that there are other solutions other than reformatting my hard drive and re-installing windows 98.

The programs are still working but to launch them via the desktop and programs menu icons, it will not work. So I how do I repair the file association?

I've tried downloading a registry fix, but i can't even open that with mozilla becuase mozilla keeps asking me what to open it with !!!

Any help will also be appreciated.

Lloydon1, Go to the link below and download & run the Fixsewn.inf file. If you can't access the Internet with the problem computer use another computer to download the Fixswen.inf file onto a floppy disk or CD. Transfer the floppy disk or CD to the problem computer then save the fixswen.inf file to your local hard disk, right-click on the file and choose install.
Hopefully whatever screwed with the file associations didn't screw up the .inf file association.

Lloydon1. First, open the File Types dialog from any Explorer window (Tools | Folder Options | File Types Tab). Scroll down to where .EXE would be in the alphabetical order and make certain .EXE is there (if it is, then fix it there by choosing "Application"). If it's not listed select the New button, type in EXE for the extension and select the Advanced button. From the list pick "Application". I'm using Windows XP so your's may be slightly different.

Thanks Tufenuf, but still now working. Yours must be different to my version, but i found the file options there was no .EXE file, so i made a new one, and did what you said, but the application description has lots of different three digit codes, so not sure which one to pick. Any Ideas ??

Cheers

Lloydon1, "I've tried downloading a registry fix, but i can't even open that with mozilla becuase mozilla keeps asking me what to open it with !!!"

Are you saving the reg fix file to your hard drive when you download it? If you are right click the .reg file then click on "merge". The same thing goes for the Fixswen.inf file only you'd right click it then choose install. I wish I had a Windows 98/98SE machine available which would help but I only have a XP machine in front of me.

Also the program used to open or merge .reg files would be regedit.exe

"In general" don't assume that all files that you download should be "opened". This works for pictures, video and sound but many/most other files either need to be put in place or activated by some other means.

Tufenuf, done exactly what you said, the reg entry was opened by regedit, and the other file i clicked install, although when i did that i didn't see anything happen.

Nothing had changed still - Help !

Download EXEFIX08.COM from the following website and see if this helps:

Save the file into some folder or other then go to the folder/file and double click exefix08.com

I "think" that's the right procedure but I've not used it personally. It only restores to normal default settings so it should be harmless.

... it says IE, so if use that if it is onboard. Not sure if Mozilla will accept it but it looks like there are alternatives.
