Hi! I'm having problems starting up my computer normally. Instead I have to boot up using safe mode and then reboot to get into normal mode. When in safe mode I get the following error

Exception ESock Error in Module RUNDLL16.exe at 00073EC0
10038: Socket operation on non socket.

Can someone please tell me what this means and what to do to fix it. Thank you very much in advance.

G:)

whats the problem booting up? Safe mode will not let you operate all the features,,,,,,,but will help diagnose what is wrong........Do you have a backup disc?

answer to exception error>> in laymans terms, something went wrong at that module.....common mishap,,,,,Ive had them,,,,,restarting computer usually corrects the EXCEPTION ERROR. So dojn't worry about that .......more important to solve boot up. Need info on BOOT UP PROBLEM

I also have a similar error on boot-up - '...Systray.dl (or one of it's components) is not found...'

I recently found three files where infected with BackDoor-G2.svr virus, which McAfee software where unable to clean so I deleted them. One of them was SYSTRAY.dl, hence the error.

Is SYSTRAY.dl a valid file, and where do I go to get another copy? Or so I just need to update SYSTRAY.exe to remove the link to SYSTRAY.DL?

Thank you

I have found the reference to SYSTRAY.DL in my SYSTEM.INI file.

shell=Explorer.exe systray.dl

I deleted "systray.dl" and no longer have the error. My computer is working fine - so far.

Was this file inserted by the virus, and I have no more problems, or is SYSTRAY.DL (or SYSTRAY.DLL)a valid file I should have?

Thank you

I ran into the same problem with SYSTRAY.DL and I had to delete it. I also deleted the reference in the SYSTEM.INI file and then rebooted. Not a problem. Thanks for the help!

I too would like to know if this file was inserted by the virus? Or if it is a valid file? If SYSTRAY.DL (or SYSTRAY.DLL) is valid, how/where can I restore it?

Thanks.

The SYSTRAY.DL file is actually the backdoor Trojan file under another name. After trying to restore it from my WIN98 cab files and not finding it, I decided to do a search on the web. The following URL might be of some interest to you all.

http://www.commodon.com/threat/threat-sub7.htm

In any case, remove the entry in SYSTEM.INI as previously suggested and delete the file. You should have no problem thereafter.

Systray.dl is definitely NOT a valid file. I found this "sub-7" type trojan by using "the cleaner" available at Moosoft.com. The problem files for me were systray.dl found in the windows directory, and a file called favpnmcfee.dll found in the system directory. Niether file would let me delete it as Windows had loaded it and thus had control of it. Once the ini files were cleaned up as someone here described, a quick reboot, and the files were history. Havent had any problems since. I was getting a runtime error 216 which seemed to be triggered by leaving Explorer.

Do you see what nicholas wrote a couple of paragraphs ahead of mine? That is my problem. Only I can not access the internet, it will connect but will not let me view web pages... What in the heck is this file for? Could it be a trojan horse?

Application Error .
"exception EsockError in module MSREXE.exe at 00057C5D."
:is caused by the Sub-Seven (a trojan which gives someone else full access to you PC remotely) which fails to activate -fortunatley!. MSREXE.exe could be named something else. If you do get a message like this, try removing this file in DOS and the command that attempts to start it, usually in win.ini or the registry. Or get the Cleaner from moosoft.com and remove it.

Remember-- open .exe files from trusted sources only !

I get the same "exception ESock error but mine is in module PWRSVM.exe at 00057C5d.
Socket operation in non-socket." Rebooting usually gets rid of it, but recently I was booting in safe mode to defrag my hard drive when I kept getting this message. I want to resolve this for good. I might try the same method and delete references in the win.ini. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I too received the "systray.dl" error upon booting up, ran a net search on it, found the "commodon.com" website previously mentioned, and effectively deleted it. My question is, regarding this "remote control" of one's computer, how extensive is this "control", how long can you tell this has been going on, and do you need to change all your passwords as a result?

I received a call of the same error " Exception esock in module pwrsvm.exe at 00057c5d" 10038:socket operation on non-socket. All I had teh person do was rename the system.ini file and then had the eu copy a fresh system.ini file into the c:\windows from the system.sav/windows file, and that seemed to work.
