Excel File Locked for Editing

I am using a Toshiba Laptop Computor pre bundled with Office 2000. I have created and saved files in Excel but when trying to access them get a message "file is locked for editing by 'User', open as read only.
This is an intermitant problem - can somebody help on how to correct the problem. Would appreciate a reply to pencol@mango.zw

Try copying your data from the locked file into a new file, and be carefull what options you select when performing operations and saving.
