I just wanted to know if there's any difference between excel 97 running under windows 95 and excel 97 running under windows 2000. I created some xls reports with Java using jakarta POI and a fool user just said it doesn't work with windows 95 and excel 97 but it does under win 2000, so that's the cause of this question. Thanks.
Java: Coding the future !

Your "fool user" is probably quite right. Theres a world of difference between Windows 95 and Windows 2000. The only similarity between the two is that they both have Windows in the title.
Anything compiled under Windows 2000 is going to be a bit iffy running under Windows 95.

I agree with Stuart.
What you have to look at Justme and you actually quote it your self is the file format.
Office 2000(Excel) uses the xls file format whereas MS Works(Excel) uses an xlr(I feel sure) format.
The spreadsheet looks to be exactly the same but without a few bells and whistles that Office 2000 has to offer.

On a hot summers night would you offer your throat to the Wolf with the Red Roses?

Hmmm, well, if it's the same program, even though installed on different o/s's, i can't think of anything reason why it wouldn't open the xls files. Bout the only thing that comes to my mind that 'might' prevent your situation, would be making sure you has the JVM (java virtual machine)up to date using the same or newer version you created with.

Just another reply to try and get some clarification for Justme;
"I just wanted to know if there's any difference between excel 97 running under windows 95 and excel 97 running under windows 2000. In Justme's post, I don't see anything referencing MSWorks?? I run office 97 on win98 and on winxp. I have to date, never had a problem opening a file I create on one o's on the other. The program, excel 97, for the general purpose, doesn't care what the "o/s" is it's runnning on. If it is compatable with the o/s, then the files it creates will open on any other o/s with the same program. If I read Justme's post correctly, he's not compiling anything under the o/s, he's compiling the .xls files with the excel 97 program.If the house catches fire, SAVE the computer!!

As suggested by Sean, its probably the Java thing that causing the problem. Different OAs with different versions of Java.
Stuart

I agree that it does not matter which OS you are using when using Excel 97 on each.
"I created some xls reports with Java"
But that would make a difference.
